the problem that most people have with balancing their day job and creative work is that they do the day job part first, which means that (1) you’ve already given your most productive hours to The Man and (2) when you get done with 8 hours of bullshit, instead of getting to rest you now have to motivate yourself to do *more work*, which is immensely demotivating. in contrast, if you wake up early and do your creative work *before* the day job, you’ll have way more energy to give to your projects, and when you get home from The Man you get to rest easy knowing you already put in your hours for the day. even though i work freelance now i still implement this - wake up early, work out, do my writing, and *then* i worry about shit for my clients. i highly recommend it

Honestly really smart. and with that, you get to go to bed early, which pairs super well with coming home from work exhausted

@KIAN additional bonus - you are much less likely to be bothered by texts / notifs / etc in the early morning, which lends it even more to deep work

@DOTMATRICES now the real question is, whats the best way of getting your body to get used to being a Morning person? Is it just as simple as biting the bullet and just doing it?

@KIAN see my recent rec about doing something super hedonistic when you wake up lmao - try to get your pattern started on fri-sat-sun, and make sure you do something that is fun and engaging as soon as you wake up each of those mornings. i had to reset my cycle recently and playing wii games was perfect - it was fun enough to motivate me to get out of bed but still was mentally and physically engaging enough to wake me up

For me, I know that I am going to get the most stuff done when I first wake up. I don’t even do the things that are going to distract me like my phone or sitting down until I finish. I also unintentionally created incentive for myself because I don’t play my little word games until get a bunch of stuff done that I need to 🤪 Everyone has a time during the day where they have the most energy and focus. Figure out when that is for you and try to work with that. I know for me that the longer the day goes on the less likely I am to do those things, so I plan around it. Some people actually can only work like that at like, 8 PM. Maybe you’re nuts and work really well after lunch!!! Anyway, TLDR, pay attention to your natural rhythm and work with it.

I’ve historically struggled with getting anywhere on time because it’s hard to get up in the morning, but I’ve recently made the effort to get to work around 30 min before everyone — and while this may not be great for work/life balance — it does set up the day nicely. Feels good to have a little calm before the storm so to speak. Plus it’s a way for me to justify getting coffee on the way in most days

a couple years ago my friend would make plans with me ~9-10am and we'd stop hanging out at 2 and go "holy shit there's like, a whole day left" even though we'd already been going for four or five hours which would not feel true if we started at say, 11-12 recently have been trying this new thing where i shift my working hours forward so i'm online from 7-3 or even 8-4 instead of 9-5 and it's similarly liberating; it's just rewarding to take back your own time a little bit and feel like "because i woke up earlier there's more time in my day"
