im talking the 50s style diners, the small breakfast place that is family owned, the restuant that has become a local chain and only exists in one state, the bar that one guy has continually owned since the beginning of time, the tiny soda bar that popped up nearby, the coffee shop run by an ex-convict donating money to charity in their small town. the stuff that you could get for cheaper at a fast food place but let's be honest the experience at one of these places is more human and more yummy all for it

being home in massachusetts im surrounded by these joints. the food is always average, but that's not the point. it's about the consistency, the booths, the drip coffee, the plastic cups and ceramic mugs, the vinyl tables, the yellow paper receipt, and yes, the passable food. never had a bad conversation or experience with a loved one at a greasy spoon. also a great place to eat alone and read a newspaper like a little old chap. what you order at a diner says a lot about you

i think everyone should have a place where they are a regular thatโ€™s not a chain. where they really know people. iโ€™ve been going to the same diner my whole life (my grandparents started the tradition) and i took pictures with the waitresses iโ€™ve known since i was a baby when i graduated. itโ€™s nice to have family everywhere (and free coffee isnโ€™t too bad either).

Cozy diner for basics - its restricted menu and limited hours keep it focused and like a little treat in the morning. It doesn't fall into the trap of "trying to do too much" when you only want a full breakfast, grits, some black coffee, and a slice of whatever two pies they're currently making. Saw Will Mahony there once.
