last year i knew i was spending 5 weeks studying abroad & could bring a limited number of books with me so in the lead up i went through & created a summer reading list which i pared down to a beautiful 4 physical books & various ebooks… the limited number meant i read them all & challenged me to create a list of criteria which i wanted to check off in my list. for ur own list, consider my considerations: - one nonfiction & one poetry (anthology so as to keep things interesting & let it last) - (if travelling) a book taking place in the city ur visiting - whiplash between each book over some characteristics & a great similarity over others (ie very different voices but similar aged characters/scenarios, similar themes but with different attitudes towards them) - anthologies/collections are the best move (i read leonard cohen’s the favourite game/beautiful losers which were two novels collected into one book)

I think reading the entire Neapolitan quartet by elena ferrante is the perfect way to spend three weeks by the beach
otherwise I’d try to get thru something long thats been on my reading list but is outside my usual tread. I’m thinking anna karenina. the Fifth season by nk jemisin. (I only occasionally read sci fi). moby dick. Someone else just recommended american gods which I listened to while driving to Maine once and I think would also be good in this category.
Another option is really traditional detective stories, especially by a really prolific author—Agatha christie or someone like that.
Lastly, I once lent my friend my copy of 100 years of solitude which she read on vacation and said was perfect.
i hope this is helpful even though it’s sort of broad!!

I’ve read 20 books so far. How do I rate my books? It really just depends on my mood & I don’t really have a list of rules. I haven’t read anything for April (finals & everything ugh). I’ve been listening to Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova on audiobook during my long commutes. And I attempted to start reading 2666 by Roberto Bolaño but I’ve only read maybe 10 pages. It’s a very thick book haha

I can be somewhat flighty with my books (reading based on mood) so usually have an extensive currently-reading pile which I’ll work to finish slowly until they’re due at the library: Sag harbor, colson whitehead Indelicacy, Amina Cain Bad blood, John carreyrou The other Americans, laila lalami Fear of flying, Erica jong Travelers to unimaginable lands, dasha kiper
Once I’ve worked through those, id like to read: james, percival Everett The premonition, banana yoshimoto What are you going through, sigrid nunez
