listen. i know it's long. by god trust me, i know that it's long and challenging to read and every character has like 5 different names and some characters have the same name. BUT. it is worth all of the pain and suffering it takes to get through it. one of these days i will be successful in convincing someone to read it.

@MOONBEAMS it definitely has its issues inherent with being a russian novel from the 19th century, but i think it's such a beautiful depiction of humanity and family and the complications of war on all classes and it's following a time when the national identity was shifting from christian monarchy to atheism and communism so it has very interesting commentary on class and religion. it's such an important story to the literary canon. i cried a couple times reading it, and i'm really hard to make cry generally

@MOONBEAMS i personally recommend the constance garnett translation too. it's felt the most approachable version i've found while still maintaining the beauty of the original

Winds of War and War and Remembrance.
Just finished the second of this two part series. Read on an e-reader. I kept wondering: why is this book taking so long to read? Then once finished I saw the page count: 1,396 pages. That's why!
Anyway, this is an incredible pair of novels, which follow one family and others in their orbit, from 1939 to 1945β€”spanning just about every theatre of war, politics, and heartbreak from that era. Berlin, Washington, Moscow, the Pacific, Europe, concentration camps, and so on.

just finished this morning while sitting outside my apartment with a cup of coffee and an american spirit and holy shit the last chapter may have been one of the most devastating vibes i've felt... just like all of history, everything that's mattered, swept into oblivion by the closures of story, prophesy, and family lines... so so so good u should read it but be warned that every paragraph in this book is full to the brim with activity, everything feels as if its happening all at once for the entire four hundred something pages

this idea of "you don't owe anyone anything" came about through the social media therapists that try to diagnose complete strangers with a multitude of issues and complexes. all it has done has made selfish people more selfish and divided us as a community.
you do not owe everyone everything, but if you consider yourself part of a community, a society, you do owe everyone something. at a base level you owe people kindness, respect (as long as they haven't lost the right to it), and basic human decency. you owe your loved ones even more.
stop being selfish and rude in the name of treating your so-called "people pleasing."
