when i was younger: a slightly on-the-fritz toaster that's been with you since your uni dorm days and you haven't felt the need to replace yet because the slight char on your bread has become an acquired taste, whose case is slightly sun-bleached from its place by the window, sitting quite happily on the kitchen counter on a thursday afternoon i think i'm slowly into my arc of becoming a battered, well-loved, sticker-covered student's laptop who hasn't given up yet somehow despite a good few close calls eventually, the aim is a bottle of orange liqueur sitting in a minibar or on a kitchen counter next to a stack of board games ready for a games night

as far as material things go... - falling back in love with reading for pleasure and not for academic requirement - flat-wound guitar strings because they last forever and sound fantastic even when they're dead - old goofy mugs; it's like a more buttoned-up equivalent to finding that out of pocket t-shirt at the thrift and i love how much character they add

i love stuff perhaps a little too much and it’s impossible for me to pick a single trinket but in general i think the stuff that i own that’s the most important to me at this point is stuff i’ve gotten secondhand at estate sales vs just bought new. assigning a personal history to something older than myself, keeping things that meant something to someone else meaningful for a little while longer. started going estate sale-ing summer after i finished college with a great friend i made at school, which feels like the start of becoming the me i am now and collecting stuff that i really intentionally wanna try and keep for the rest of my life. pictured below is a grail from my first ever estate sale: a yearbook from my school 100 years before my graduation. it’s the first thing you see when you walk into my apartment, the first place i lived in alone long-term - kinda wanna keep it by every entryway as i move apartments.

dont treat your shit like it’s disposable! . My laptop is old as hell and doesn’t work unless it’s plugged into a wall, but you know what I am proud that I cared for it like the finely arranged clump of precious metals and plastics that it is instead of like something I have to upgrade because there’s been 10 new versions in the last 8 years I’ve had it. In fact it makes me a fucking saint. I also always hang dry my undies so they don’t stretch out and get holes in them from heat damage. Things will last if you invest just a modicum of care into them..additionally it feels really nice to be able to point to a hideous Victoria’s Secret thong on the drying rack and say “I’ve had that for 14 years”. Also probably in 2 more years gen alpha kids will point to my laptop and call it “vintage”, so that’s something to look forward to. Ok Rec over

i've been really into the idea of taking myself on little solo dates and being generally kinder to myself lately, i think i've been happier with myself recently than i have ever been (the joys of growing up, i guess). and the realisation that i have real adult money and free will and can spend it on whatever is fun! i've been going to more concerts and on little trips and i saw that this one comedy duo i've been seeing a lot on social media were doing a live recording of their podcast in glasgow later this month, and i booked a ticket! planning on taking the day to do a little walking tour of the city, check out a doughnut place someone recommended to me, find a cool looking bar and order myself a pretty cocktail and head to the show - just really make a day of it :) i don't know, i guess i've been really leaning into the idea that of all the people in my life, i am the one i'll have to spend the most time with, and i've been learning to have more fun hanging out with myself, and i feel like i'm coming into my own a little which just makes me so happy <3 hang out with yourself more! life is short man

i've been doing little things to make my life a little easier, like leaving a bottle of water, iron supplements and some belvita soft bakes right by my bed so i always have breakfast, water and iron in the morning, and keeping a very condensed set of skincare stuff right by my toothbrush - it might not be as effective as having more but getting myself to use a cleanser, moisturising sunscreen and vaseline every day has already made my skin feel so much better which has just gotten me more excited to do my routine every day. plus, getting body sprays and haircare stuff and just products in general that you really like the smell of is a game changer because now i get to smell like pineapples and caramel every day! it's such little things but it makes me happy and keeps me doing a routine of things that are good for me :))

there's really something about summer. i was back in my home city and i've been more content than i've been in ages. i've been slowly but surely becoming a more functional, productive person and i revised for an exam in the sun, got myself a really good chai latte, took myself for a long walk - slowly feeling less like a cave creature trapped in mental hibernation
