everything is politics. from vaccines to lgbt matters, politicians have leveraged the things conservative americans don’t understand to stoke fear and confusion. this isn’t anything new. what is new is the algorithms that reenforce those fears. comment sections we’re told to treat like real conversation just flooded with faceless accounts saying their most vile inside thoughts. it’s easy to want to interact and easier to just read it all and be mad. but every second spent engaging is another brain scrambling distraction. these sensationalized posts and comments do nothing for education, understanding, or empathy. even on the left, slacktivism actively hurts the cause. theres an idea that someone who holds ignorant beliefs is *bad* in all politicized fields. but let’s be real, just because uncle jeff is pissed about tuck underwear it doesn’t mean he’s a climate change denier. generalizing people is exactly what politicians want from us. social issues are important and politics aren’t going away from that any time soon. but social media is a slippery slope and i personally refuse to engage. when it bleeds into my real life (ā€parents just WANT their kids to be transā€) i try to engage in conversations that get to the root of the issue. where’s this info coming from, why do you believe that? these are the kind of questions strangers won’t ask them on the internet. misinformation is a sickness that we’re all plagued with. to find some truth and understanding we cannot be having these discussions on platforms like facebook or instagram or twitter. if we do, we’re just giving these tech ceos and politicians what they need: engagement and fear

about social media (esp facebook), filter bubbles, and how knowing too much about everyone is making us more polarized

there is lowkey an unbelievable crisis in tech literacy atm, and working on the projects that i have over the last year has driven that home for me like nothing else. once upon a time, understanding how a computer worked was a precondition for using one. it isn’t anymore, and that is so unimaginably dangerous. the total helplessness i’ve seen (some) people express in response to tech’s recent rightward turn has been deeply unmooring. i see people all the time who genuinely do not understand how the platforms and devices that *govern their entire lives* operate on a basic level. ā€œthe kidsā€ didn’t become computer wizards - instead, the devices got good enough that they could abstract all of their actual functionality away from you. the amount of power and control knowing even a little bit about digital technology can give you is immense. learn about http. learn about rss. learn about how servers operate. learn the absolute basics of programming. far dumber people than you are doing it every day in silicon valley, and they (and their bosses) are using those skills against you.

Been watching a lot of stuff lately that touches on the intersection of geo-politics and the cyberization of the body (see Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, X-Files, The Shrouds, etc.) So often people are really down on how complex and amorphous the plots can be but isn’t that the whole point? What better reflects our reality than a messy shadow world brimming with malicious government and tech sector actors seeking to weaponize our bodies and minds? These stories aim for a certain realism and achieve it in their refusal to provide clean answers. So often, there is no truth for us anymore. Everything is a false flag, everything is a psy-op, who does the smoking man really work for? We’re the victims and we can only grasp at half-truths and accept that we’ll never know. Yet in accepting that, we reach a deeper truth of another kind.

my chameleon died this morning and i buried him in my mom’s backyard. i had a lot of ladders in his cage, he seemed to really like to zip around on em. it was hard to see him lose mobility in his old age, but i like to remember him as a climber. rest in peace mr. princess
