Didn’t get everything I wanted, in fact got pretty mistreated as an over correction against babying me My mom definitely saw me as her baby and still does, but whenever we’d have a big family conflict and I’d be justifiably extremely upset and she would rightfully try to defend and comfort me, nobody would let her :/ I *do* fulfill the stereotype of being the weirdest, least traditional, most liberal/progressive, and most likely to move far from home, though! And it’s true that my parents were more relaxed about curfews and such with me, but that could be because I literally didn’t do anything like drinking or partying and they actually knew/believed that (so I *don’t* live up to being the most rebellious or experimental, that would be the second child for my family lol)

Our almost 4 yr old is sweet as pie and gentle… a sensitive little princess. She hates doing anything ā€œwrongā€ and enjoys sitting calmly at the table drawing or doing crafts. Our 19 month old is pure chaos. Trying to climb the stairs when we look away for 0.5 seconds and jump off stuff. He has this sneaky grin that shows off adorable little dimples. It keeps us on our toes as parents to have very different kids and I think it evens things out maybe??

I’m not a parent and do not plan to be. Kids can wear me out fast with their high energy and noise level; it leaves me very over-stimulated. But it’s pretty extreme when people say they ā€hate kidsā€ and I often feel it’s a reflection of their childhood and beliefs around how kids ā€œshould be.ā€ That they were expected to be quiet, obedient, and out of the way by their parents when they were little. It’s fucking hard to be a kid. You’re dealing with a rapidly-changing body and underdeveloped brain, managed by flawed adults who are enforcing boundaries that you do not understand. It’s confusing and hard to manage your feelings and honestly just a lot. People are impatient with kids when theyā€˜re brand new to the world and figuring it all out, and this is a time kids need a friend the most. Children can also be teachers to adults with how they are less habituated to the world. They teach us how to be free and open-hearted and silly and imaginative. A good practice is to be kinder and gentler with kids. If that feels difficult, start with gentleness toward your inner child. Maybe that’s the child in your life that needs your attention and kindness most.
