I have to treat myself like a small child or animal and literally lock my phone up in a box with a timed lock. There is no way to get it open until the timer goes off. Knowing there’s no loophole, my brain gives up on making excuses to check it pretty quickly once I’ve locked it up. Is this kind of absurd and extreme? yeah, but I have yet to find anything else that works.

Admittedly this is a bit severe, but the most effective way to stop myself from scrolling started with getting this phone lock box….you put your phone in there and set the timer…. there’s no way to get your phone out until the timer sounds!

I have this thing called a Kitchen Safe. Basically you can lock anything inside it for a set amount of time. So I’ll lock my phone in there for a few hours and I notice a big productivity boost. I think it’s more effective than just putting your phone in another room because in your mind you know that it’s literally impossible to access your phone until the timer is up (unless you break the Kitchen Safe with a hammer). It’s like making and enforcing a contract with yourself to make a certain block of time phone-free.

this app where you can ‘lock in’ with friends and see who can go without using their phone the longest. blocks all non-essential apps while youre locked in - a life saver when studying

I sometimes worry that people think I do this to be quirky but actually I just really feel the weight of making sure this little guy is having a good life on my shoulders. it takes a lot of patience and occasionally results in disaster, but it’s worth it.
