It’s been probably the most talked up show of the season so of course I had to take a 6am train in to line up for lottery.. Absolutely did not disappoint!! The production of this show has been so talked up, the lighting, choreography, and the jumbotron sized video screen. It blew my mind, the screen is something I’ve never seen in a show before and they utilized it to the fullest extent. The first scene that was really an extended opening credits gave me chills.. Tom’s walk to start the second act was so amazing that I’m running out of adjectives already!! If you’re in the city around 3:30 on a Wednesday or Saturday you *have* to watch it from the outside of St James.. I’m trying to figure out how I can go back in time to see it myself. I was sitting left orchestra so he walked right by me as he entered! Pic is from my seat, best seats I’ve had to a show even if they were slightly obstructed view.. If you can get rush those edge orchestras are usually blocked off for it so go for it!! All of the action happens downstage anyways so it was fine, I missed nothing important aside from Nicole’s first entrance as she came on stage from that side.. and to talk about Nicole… WOW! Shoo in for the Tony this year. Her opera background really shines through, I have no idea how she has the stamina to give that performance 8 times a week. The story was solid, not the greatest ever but the performances and production (of course) really brought it to life.. The last segment of the show was also some of the most uncomfortable I’ve been in a theater in the best way.. really did not predict the resolution happening the way it did.
I really don’t go to a lot of shows so I try to pick out the ones I’ll enjoy the best or are most well reviewed and this was another success in that regard. If you can go you should go sooner than later as things only get busier from here now that Tony nominations are out !
