hear me out. I am watching my 65 year old dad use Instagram and social media like I used to when it first came out and I was 14, and nothing brings me more joy. It is simultaneously nostalgic, ironic (because who tells you to get of your phone more than your parents), and unifying because we really are all the same. Over the past few years I’ve watched him progress from not having a profile photo and 20 followers, to having over 600 (? Huh), sending me reels more than I send him, and posting slideshows (youre not supposed to be chill like dat).
but it’s really very charming

The oldest active social network is now correctly seen as passé, cringe, and even trashy. But I have a soft spot for making a sentimental well written post for my older relatives to read

Social media has always stressed me the hell out because, by the time I joined, every platform I was on already had a very established culture I guess?
I waited a very long time to join instagram, and when I finally did, it was pretty deep into the influencer era and around the same time Meta was starting to lean harder into the advertising and engagement-bait (reels, non-chronological timeline where random posts were prioritized over ones from actual friends) so it never really felt like a fully social space to me. People I knew would spend hours with their friends asking each other for approval on curated posts about group hangouts, and I just felt like there were a bunch of "rules" about how to present yourself that I wasn't clued in on.
Being on here is refreshing because it's the first time I've ever experienced a young social network! There's no pressure, no expectation, no heavy advertising, no lifestyle influencers, no way to monetize your posts and turn it into a side hustle, etc. Everyone just kind of talks about stuff they enjoy!
It's made me realize why so many people are nostalgic for the myspace and early instagram days for sure haha

Like many of us, I've been on social media since early adolescence. It's part of who I am for better or worse.
Now I work in social media, so I'm not really able to remove myself from it completely. I need to be in the know about trends and new features :/ Sometimes it's exciting, but I know it's so bad for me (and everyone). I'm also 30 now and I'm starting to feel like some online spaces aren't really for me anymore. Also MZ can smd!
But I do love stories, especially close friends stories. I find it to be one of the quickest ways to share my life with most of my friends. I can find community events, mutual aid opportunities, Also good for stalking and crushing heheehe what can I say.

lately ive found myself casually chewing on treats and stuff at work, and today I asked myself why...why can't I stop doing this? My reasoning was, "I'm tired and want to feel better." Hmmm..I think I associate food with "feeling better," like it will improve my mood – ie it's having a lasting effect on me and helping me get through the day, like it's my SSRI.
Today I realized, maybe it's okay to just feel shitty and tired. I was pushing myself to be productive, efficient, energized etc "to feel better" so I could work better and feel better about the work I was doing. But why? I do a good job, the only difference is my attitude about it. You actually don't need to be EXCITED about work to get shit done.
Obviously this isn't me saying you should deprive yourself, like go get your treats girl. But I just had never thought of it that way. So yeah, embrace feeling crappy
