If im talking to someone and it starts getting awkward I would say: "nice talking to you" or something like that then leave. I can never think of what to say.

Maybe this should be a last resort, but it's what I often find myself doing: just plainly letting them know that you are moving on. Hopefully you can also say you enjoyed talking with them. "Thanks for taking the time to chat with me. I'm going to drift along now." "Thanks for sharing what you did. I'm going to move along, but will be thinking about _____." Also, turkey — wondering about this question... is this a general ask or do you have a particular person or situation in mind?

exiting conversations is such a cool thing to do. You gotta have some go-to phrases, and say them like it’s no big deal, because it is no big deal. I really enjoy leaving group conversations too. Just walk away and do something else if I don’t like what’s happening. ā€œhey it was nice talking with you… I’m going to go grab a drinkā€ ā€œI’m going to see what’s happening over thereā€œ ā€œExcuse me, there’s someone I’ve been wanting to say hi toā€œ ā€œI have to go powder my nose/use the WC/see a man about a horseā€
