I believe it’ll die down, like the metaverse thingy did. Zuck and others are so bad at understanding what people really want.
I’m annoyed, as a designer and maker of visual stuff, that some job descriptions now put gen AI usage as the most important skills when it’s far from it. Last year I had two job interviews that turned out to be with AI wrappers and I literally cried from the feeling that these people waste my time because they were speaking in AI cliches.

And on the newer MS outlook, it completes sentences while you compose the email... I keep overriding, so it asks, 'was this helpful?' No.... 'how can we improve?' my answer: SHUT THE F--K UP!

@POSSIBLE me too!! i made the switch yesterday. like it does also have an AI chat but it doesn’t force it on you like google does now which is annoying. I need responses written by people!! unfortunately i do think that sources (at least the not so reliable ones) will also be written by AI as that’s the ‘easy way out of writing anything‘ that people take

yes i go to art school and even we are having AI pushed on us. most professors don’t like it but the admin makes them.

I’m genuinely shocked you have professors pushing this on you… I honestly have too much to say about it all to put it here, but it basically is an arms race for corporate superiority (and the tech is/will be used for policing, surveillance, and weapons, so arms race is literal here).

@THECLACK the rhetoric around it at the university i’m doing exchange in is about “staying on top of your field” and being a “top applicant” because they want everyone (even those in the humanities) to use AI so that we don’t “stay behind”. if anything AI is keeping most of my classmates behind!!

Yes those voice control programs are AI, though it is a bit more nuanced than that. I am not really qualified to explain it but AI is a *very* wide range of technologies. At the simplest level, AI is an algorithm that evaluates and carries out the best option. For example, any "CPU" character in a video game is a form of AI. It's hard to speak on things that are constantly being developed like how Siri is, and I was always averse towards any sort of voice controlling, but it is a safe bet to say that the type of work Siri and even Alexa do are a far cry from that of GPT and Gemini and shit. They are limited in function and this railroading means they are not nearly as environmentally damaging. They only have so many options as far as how to answer a given prompt and spend less processing power on deciding what to do. Most of the tasks they perform are done "inside" the device itself. Where Gemini and GPT get their immense power usage is from sending requests to servers, which then process the requests, which then send them back millions of times a day.
Again this is how it works to my best understanding as someone who is moderately computer literate, but I could be wildly off target !!

@GRAPE righttt, i think this makes a lot of sense. also i don’t think siri or alexa actively learn from the user like chat gpt does, i think the prompts and voice recognition are already programmed within it so that it recognizes something already done yk. not sure if i’m right but i just wanted to know if i’m destroying the planet by asking siri to set my alarm💔. thanks so much grape !! ^_^

@GRAPE I believe they do pick up on things like accents in order to better interpret stuff but generally no things like alarms don’t require much !! Don’t sweat that stuff.. the only thing that could even potentially cause issues relating to high energy usage would be analytics gained from using, but at that point you’d need to unplug completely lol
