šWhether from your own town or one youāre visiting ā nothing beats local merch. A few weeks ago I stayed on Winnipesaukee and hit up the localsā favorite grocery mart āJoJoāsā. I couldnāt leave without a branded classic diner mug. I also own a tee from the town I live in, copped from the CVS down the road, as well as a giant assortment of tees and trinkets from other vacation spots. If itās a place that documents your travels or life, it will bring you joy using/wearing it, (plus its just sick to rep a place or business thatās hyper-specific to your life).

I started doing this in a period when I was experiencing deep confusion about who I was. I found being in a hat or sweatshirt with some signifiers specific to me or an idea I wanted to live by that day pinned me down and pumped me up. I use Jonathan Embroidery Plus in the garment district but most malls have a stand that offers this service. Embroidery is expensive but I think cements the idea best.

āMaking your own merch for your life has never been more easy. I used to go to Kinkos as a kid because they would put anything on a t-shirt. Now I make embroidered hats with inside jokes and print stills from "Dead Poets Society" on crewnecks. It's a lot of fun to find a piece of clothing you like and add onto it.

I work on a college campus where we have this statue of a rat with giant balls and it has become a regular phenomenon for students/people to offer their vapes to the ball rat. It is both so silly and so beautiful to me.
