yeah, it has definitely breached independent band culture pretty badly - it has always been a thing but it’s got much worse.
I saw someone muse on it being influenced by the popularity of K-pop but I don’t feel comfortable attributing it to that.
Anecdote time:
I had to make a decision to stop supporting an indie band because they kicked my now-friend out over his looks.
He was chunkier than them, and more “normal” style wise than them but he was a skilled & competent bassist and very good live.
Another friend of mine (modelesque, also skilled but less reliable) got approached by them to play — he went directly to the aforementioned guy and shared the screenshots because he couldn’t work out if the guy had left or not. Transpired it was an aesthetics based decision.
I used to be at their shows when they played to nobody but me and the bartender. I didn’t miss a single gig, I danced alone and I know it meant a lot to them, and the audience they grew was great, they worked hard but the way they just decided this guy was no longer part of the band because of shallow reasons made me so upset that I couldn't support them anymore.

The other day I saw someone talking about (in the context of A Complete Unknown) how if Bob Dylan was up-and-coming today he would have to look like Timothée Chalamet to make it in the industry. She was saying how crazy it is that so many legendary artists would probably have to look like supermodels today to get any sort of serious recognition - I hadn’t even thought about that until I saw that, but she was so right! It’s so saddening to see so much focus be put on looks.

this is also true for british TV vs american TV — they all look NORMAL in british TV and everyone in american TV is this pore-less, airbrushed botoxed carbon copy of the kardashians 😭😩
