If you feel a conversation getting awkward, confidently connect with them about something… maybe you like their shoes or are intrigued by something they said earlier and want to dive deeper. Make sure you’re open physically to the conversation (arms not crossed, torso/feet pointed toward the person). Bring warmth and smiles. It’ll be fine! If it’s a new person at work, ask about how they got to where they are today. You’ll surely find some kind of tidbit in there to connect about.

Sometimes the best thing to do is just embrace the awkwardness. sometimes a Conversation gets awkward and the more you try to avoid that, the more the conversation becomes artificial and dis genuine. its normal to have awkward moments, and the best way to embrace it is to acknowledge it. if an awkward silence occurs maybe say “that got awkwardly quiet“ sometimes when things get awkward it’s a sign to switch subjects. ALWAYS try to find common ground when talking to new people. Ask them what they’re interested in, it’s fine to ask questions. Lastly if You draw a blank on what to say, if your brain freezes and you suddenly can’t think anymore, Make sounds until they’re words. The most awkward thing to do is nothing, so just do something

With the focus on them, being genuinely interested in what they’re saying, with a little humor. Low pressure questions- hobbies, something you’re working on, things to do, favorite restaurants or something. Don’t try too hard to force things if they‘re not moving along or they’re not receptive. You don’t want this to feel like a forced work icebreaker thing.
