I was so excited for my first foray into Dostoevsky’s work but this book has been quite obnoxious to read - at least thus far. I’m halfway through and it feels like he beats a dead horse with this bit about self-hypocrisy and irony. It was funny at first but it gets redundant. We’ll see how the latter half pans out!

yeah, it's the only Dostoevsky I've read. I remember it being grating, but I liked its sentiment!

This book is excellently written; the first-person narration and the division between the first part (an explanation of the narrator's philosophical ideas) and the second part (an account of an episode in the narrator's life that put his philosophical ideas to practice) are a great gateway to his later works.

You are gonna need to read the full body of Dostoyevsky’s work before being able to read this and truly enjoy it I fear. But it’s worth it.
