Yesterday I got into an argument with my father about whether we, in the current era can recreate am architectural masterpiece like kailasa temple and I told him that yes we can do it, it's just that it's too expensive now. This is a big issue with modern architecture in general. Architects would love to build a Roman or Greek or any classical style but it's too expensive and there are no skilled craftsmen nowadays. But we, at large ignore this point and it sometimes creates an illusion that the ancient folks had some "mysterious powers" or maybe aliens made the pyramids. Yes, the ancients had a power that separates us from them. It was boredom. There was no Instagram back in the day or Netflix. They literally had nothing else to do other than to hone a craft. They would spend centuries building a single cathedral. We can do it too if we really want to do it. They weren't special it's just that the world back then was not controlled by greedy billionaires who would try to hijack our brain. Even if there were sources of entertainment, they were accessible to the privileged and they were still grounded in reality.

@BEE1000 yes of course. Nearly every ancient mega structure has been built by slaves but that is a western take. For example, in India, where kailasa temple is, the workers had the autonomy to decide the direction of a project. You can see it everywhere. You can see mosques with Hindu motifs which is quite bizarre, but it shows the mutual respect between the sponsor and the workers.

I truly believe that boredom is a uniquely human experience and it’s what has driven our development as a society. Now we’ve eliminated boredom, so our curiosity is a fraction of what it used to be.

@CASEYSQUARED there are still people out there doing absolutely crazy things and honestly, that's just so cool. Like, wdym you have the ability to overpower the narrative that the world wants to put you in by simply creating crazy shit? I live to be like that.

It’s crazy that different ancient peoples, all over the globe, built the same shaped structures, without machinery or whatever and they perfectly align with the stars and stuff.

In retrospect horrible people, but a product of their times. However reading first person accounts of the ongoings of those days are truly awe inspiring.

my archaeology prof has talked about it in class, mostly because it reinforces very colonial ideas that certain populations could not have built these massive structures because they ‘weren’t advanced enough’ in the eyes of white europeans. graham hancock is part of a group of pseudoarchaeologists known as ‘new agers’ who believe that there was a lost civilization that was incredibly advanced, and he (and other new age believers) have a nasty habit of ignoring certain evidence and only investigating things that support their viewpoint. this isn’t a new thing, many archaeologists and anthropologists have experienced these people for many years (there’s a great new yorker article that i’ve linked about the sphinx that talks about them), but it’s dangerous to fully believe what people like that say. it’s not based on all the facts and sometimes pushes very anti-indigenous viewpoints.

It's not in our hands sometimes but it's not cool to be surrounded by people who don't take anything seriously

Y'all ever write a word and suddenly it looks wrong? Like, the word just looks unusual. Then you cross it out and write it again but it's still the same cause the spelling is right but it looks so wrong! And so you repeat, but it remains the same and at that point you're agitated! What the actual fuck is wrong with me! And so you just ignore it and continue writing but it still bothers you. You look in the dictionary and the spelling is still the same and the word still looks wrong and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.
