You can take a photo of a cathedral from across a plaza, but you might find you like better what you see up close.
Also, look at lots of other photos - I think it helps with developing an eye for what photos can look like (can, not must!).
Take pictures in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is low and the light is soft and warm.
Avoid shooting into the sun
Just take lots of photos! You donāt have to worry about buying film, after all. And know that most photographers donāt like 90% of the pictures they take.

iām no professional, but i have taken a lot of pictures :) iād say the single most important thing is composition. you sort of imagine thereās an invisible grid on your camera and you center the subject (or subjects) in a way thatās visually interesting. you could center the picture perfectly (which sometimes is the best way to go!) or you could make something asymmetrical and that creates movement in the picture. you also need to consider the foreground and background as elements of this. once you start to get the hang of it, your pictures will feel a lot more dynamic and interesting. also, linked is a video i watched when i was getting into photography that explains this better! hope this helps :)

KODAK VISION3 500T, 1 hour.
It feels like for a great shot, fortunate circumstances matter more than good preparation. How many times in my life have I planned everything, traveled somewhere, carried equipment a third of my weight, only to produce something mediocre. And here, just a DSLR, a cable, a small tripod with flexible legs, shooting from a rock next to passing cars, while having dinner, and this is the result! However, the moon hadn't risen yet, the sky was clear, and this time we drove 140km away from the city!
Recalling my first terrible shot with star trails from a Zenit camera on film back in 2015, I'm glad to see how far I've come! I hope next time I'll capture something cool in the foreground, or finally manage to take a shot with an astrotracker!

š¤ŖIām 50, I say because that makes me unusual in this context. I paid [redacted] for a ticket to the Eras Tour after listening to tswift for 3 weeks, and it was worth it. In second grade my teacher gave kids birthday spankings over her knee, and in sixth grade my teacher told my mom I hadnāt blossomed yet. Iām a good friend, mostly to people on the internet. Iām good at conversing with strangers. Iām usually the oldest person at the show but donāt feel like it. Iām good at being helpful. Iām sarcastic and funny and make myself laugh. Iām a good graphic designer and a conscientious driver. Iām a good photographer and I can successfully follow recipes. I donāt use my Peloton enough. I did a lot of caregiving for my mom for several years, and we enjoyed spending time together even if it was mostly in waiting rooms and my car. The fastest I ever ran a mile was eight minutes and six seconds. I drove the same car for 20 years and then replaced it with another one. I enjoy tipping, giving money to people on the street and Disneyland. I am a fan of baseball, Formula 1 racing and the Criterion Channel. I solve about 80% of New York Times crosswords. I take Prozac and Wellbutrin, and take Trazodone to sleep through the night. I wish I had a glassed in solarium so I could sleep in it on rainy nights. I would like to have a pet cat and a garage. I could happily live eating only cereal and fruit. I overshare on the internet and undershare elsewhere. āļøš
