Wicked Little Letters (2023) A 1920s set black comedy starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley about the drama that ensues when residents of a small town receive insulting anonymous letters
The Holdovers (2023) 1970s boarding school heartwarming caper and character study
Austenland (2013) Okay technically this is set in the 2010s BUT it's a retelling of Pride and Prejudice that takes place in an "Austen experience" in which visitors have to dress up and play the parts of 1700s society. Incredible romcom AND it has Jennifer Coolidge
The Favourite (2018) I don't know if feel good is exactly the right description but it is funny and odd with amazing costumes and is set in the 1700s
The Handmaiden (2016) This film is so wild and is based on the amazing book Fingersmith by Sarah Waters but retold in 1930s Korea. Lesbian period dark comedy twisty turny drama

Here’s a list of some of my favourite films directed by women (all rated 4 stars or above by me!). I’ve attempted to losely group them into genres which was impossible and I’ve done badly, but hopefully it will make it possible to sort of choose a vibe you might want.

a lot of these are not that critically acclaimed but they are still really fun watches!
1. SAVING FACE (2008): it is a really touching film which is set in flushing ny, it is centred around a young Chinese woman and her exploration of her sexuality. surprisingly a very easy watch but also very heartfelt.
2. FRANCES HA (2013): a bit basic but still amazing, the main character which is played by Greta Gerwig navigates feeling lost in her 20s. me and my best friend quote this movie all the time.
3. COOL RUNNINGS (1993): i grew up with this movie always in the background, it is such a classic. very funny premise: based around a jamaican bobsledding team. very lovable characters, it is a comfort watch 100%.
4. SAVE THE LAST DANCE (2001): it is def a guilty pleasure watch, it's not critically acclaimed but when has that ever stopped me. great soundtrack, vibes overall are so comforting. the storyline is very predictable but like idc.
5. 50/50 (2011): as much as i don't like joseph gordon levit, this movie is so funny and heartfelt.
6. SHE'S THE MAN (2006): when i was 14 i had to run a play in my class and we got assigned shakespeare's twelvth night, and my teacher said to watch this movie. it is such a funny movie, again quite a guilty pleasure watch but so good.
7. INTO THE WILD (2008): this rec is quite film bro but the true story it is based on was a hyperfixation of mine for years. it is a dramatic retelling of the life of chris mc candless (made my dad cry which is not an easy feat)
8. UNE FILLE FACILE (2019): set in cannes and follows two cousins. speaks a lot to female relationships and may be my fav on the list. i won't spoil anything here, i just love it and you should watch it (it is also very beautiful)
9. THE HAND OF GOD (2021): set in 1980s napoli, follows a boy and his love for football as well as his complicated family life. such a gorgeous film

1. Don't set an alarm and wake up naturally. Snooze for however long you want to, it's okay 2. Have breakfast. For me it's toast. Have it with butter/jam/honey and a lot of water and coffee and juice. 3. Listen to an album in full and do some puzzles until it ends. I like to stick a record on and do the nyt games (connections, then wordle, then the mini, then I'm ready for a crossword) 4. Shower and use all your best stuff. Smell great. Make your hair feel soft. 5. Wear an outfit you don't get to wear that often. I tend to wear the same thing over and over at work so I wear something a bit more fun and less practical. 6. Go outside. I live near a road with secondhand shops that are great browsing but quite tempting on a budget. To beat the temptation just look in the windows and then walk round the streets or to a green space if it's a nice day. Walk as fast or as slow as you like. Try and spot cats that might let you stroke them. See how each place you go smells different. Walk down streets that you've not been down before just because. 7. Come home and decide how much energy you have. If you have energy do an activity (I would write, play an instrument, do some art, read, play a game) if you don't then watch something from your watchlist. Saturdays feel like a good day to watch something new. 8. Cook yourself a meal. Start before you're hungry and spend ages on it. Use every pot. Listen to music. Sing whilst you wash the dishes. 9. Play! Video games, board games, internet games, card games, phone games, rearrange your plushies, embrace your inner child. Play with ideas, experiment with felt tip pens, write a limerick. Get silly with it. 10. Talk to your friends. Invite them over, call somebody up, text that person back you didn't have time to. I like to spend a good day off by myself then have a great time talking to people after I've recharged. 11. Have so much fun getting to do whatever you want you fall asleep at whatever time. Monday - Friday is about appeasing your body clock, Saturdays are for filthy pleasures like falling asleep at 3am because you were too busy flirting or reading or watching videos.
