ANTI-REC: SACRIFICING YOUR MORALS FOR MONEY

I’m kinda being dramatic here, but I’m legitimately experiencing a sort of cognitive dissonance over this. I deliver for Doordash, and most of the time I choose to get paid by the offer, which allows me to see the tip before delivering. The other option is pay by the hour, which expects you to take all deliveries regardless of tip (which you don’t see till after you deliver) and in exchange you get higher base-pay in the form of an hourly wage. Here’s my issue with that: by not seeing the tip, you are inevitably delivering orders to people who don’t tip, and it therefore encourages people to not tip their dashers, which I think is wrong. I hate that Doordash has built a system that encourages their users to tip less. I hate their capitalist greed for finding a way to make employees take more orders to people who don’t tip. But here’s the other thing: by working by the hour last night, I made so much more money than I did previous days. Like quadruple what I made previous days. It just kinda worked out that I got some high tippers to offset the no/low tippers. I’m so frustrated right now, because on one hand I don’t want to encourage people not to tip and support a greedy system, but in the other hand I made sooo much more money and I’m not making a lot of money these days and really need to be frugal. So shoot, I guess I’m sacrificing my morals to not be scraping by, but at least it’s not just pure greed like the Doordash company.

I really don’t think you should feel any guilt over thi!!! The only winners in a gig economy are the tech giants, private equity firms, and shareholders. Absolutely no one on doordash as an employee or a customer has any control or power over the system! In fact, tipping is the only thing that the “little guy” can control in this situation. I don’t think that the people that understand and value and labor of the dasher and want to compensate them for their work will ever be dissuaded to tip. if they are aware of and care that the dasher is being underpaid and unsupported by an evil soulless tech company, they will still tip. likewise the people that understand doordash as a “push button, get food” pavlovian-response service and either do not consider or care about the actual lived experience of the people that do the work between “push button, get food” will ever be persuaded to tip. you unfortunately don’t have control over who tips or doesn’t and i 100% support you in getting yours in this fucked situation, you’re definitely not sacrificing your morals in my opinion.

i am generally against tipping culture altogether bc people should be paid a livable wage for whatever work they do and not have the money they make be dependent on random consumers’ judgement of their performance. tipping only exists in the US. also, as a consumer, I shouldn’t have to be responsible for someone else’s livelihood, that responsibility should be on the employer. from what you wrote, it sounds like it was more rewarding for both you and the consumer to rely on a wage than on tipping, so I’m not sure why this is a moral dilemma? i can understand that tipping is seen as generally good (if you’re american) but when you look at the bigger picture it’s used as an excuse for employers to pay people less than the value of their work. I don’t think that DoorDash, in your situation, is incentivizing people to not tip if you are still going to be making more money on the wage model anyway? If anything, it is more fair to both the employee and the consumer. So I don’t think you or DoorDash have sacrificed for morals for money, unless your morals are that you don’t make as much money for the work you do.

BEING A CASUAL CREATIVE

I feel like there’s such pressure for creatives of all types to “make a name for themselves”, constantly be promoting and using all the right hashtags. Who cares? What if you just wanna make paintings for fun without monetary gain or fame in mind? What if you wanna make youtube videos just as a personal diary instead of becoming a “content creator” or “influencer”? What if you just enjoy making logos instead of wanting to be a career freelance designer who spends every waking moment keeping up to date on design trends? Maybe your goal is to make money and become popular for your art, and that’s great, go for it! But I think it’s just as valid to enjoy art for arts sake, and not feel a need to worry about posting it consistently and appeasing your followers.
