one of my favorite bits is being like have you seen pharrell’s miami condo? and the other person is always like no mckinzie why would I have seen that. and then I get to be the person to show them and they always say omg why is it so horrible and I say art is not meant to be passed between the hands of the wealthy as investment opportunities. we are destroying ourselves. anyway peep the stewie and brian kaws portraits in very prominent placement over the stairs. there are so many kaws statues actually. a marker of terrible, terrible taste. and that’s without pointing to the murakami ball statue in the corner. jesus christ man. art dealer laughed his way to the bank, I am sure.

A slender, sixteen foot long mirror spanned the floor of an exhibition studio with an uninterrupted line of cocaine running down its center. Critics and visitors alike slowly realized what the powder was and some partook, getting on all fours or lying nearly prone on the floor to do so. A sort of joke on the fiendishness of the art market that invited viewers to satiate baser wants at the cost of prostrating one’s self in front of others.

If there were a gun to my head pointed by an assailant who demanded that I describe the feeling of living in the USA using only pictures (hey, this is my unreal conditional—worry about your own), I’d simply point them in the direction of Michael St. John’s “Portraits of Democracy,” which are currently on view as “These Days” at Pio Pico gallery in LA (now extended thru Jan. 1). St. John is probably your favorite artist’s favorite artist: a lifelong student of the aesthetic form who cares more about the Big Issues than making big paintings just because that’s what someone said collectors want. He’s also a preternaturally gifted painter (by practice, no less!) whose every choice involves the deliberate reproduction of the very tension that makes life in 2020 one nonstop “Party in the U.S.A.” if you know what I mean. If you’re gonna look at art, why bother with anything you couldn’t spend your whole afternoon uncovering the intricacies of, anyway? Viewings are by appointment only, but don’t let that intimidate you—it’s literally a phone call, prolly even a DM away.

I don’t always want to post them but I find that getting into the habit of taking lots of photos, good and bad, both with people in them and not, makes me want to keep them safer than just on instagram. that’s my emotional support folder… get away from her…

I’ve been very slowly making my way through the satoshi kon filmography (like very slowly,,, I first watched perfect blue three years ago) and honestly this one might be my favorite?? a found family film through and through, which I am a gigantic sucker for. three homeless people find a baby in a dumpster and set out on a quest to find her parents, no matter the result. I think I was more receptive to it because it takes place on christmas eve and I was already feeling fresh nostalgia for a christmas eve that had just happened a few days before… but I loved being in the world this film builds. a gross, hidden tokyo built upon the backs of small kindnesses. will absolutely watch again next year because I haven’t stopped thinking about it, wanting to return to that world for a few minutes.
