i went to visit my grandparents and aunt on a whim last summer when i was home for about a month. we drove to Minnesota and went to the arboretum. there at the nice cafeteria, my grandmother told us the story of how she met my grandfather at a wedding. she talked about how they would write letters to each other. my mom later told me that she had never heard those things before. my grandfather passed away a few months later. i am so grateful to have had grandparents who built a family on love. now i write letters to my grandma and i hope it is some way a decent replacement for what she lost ♥️

@NOSTOC that is so beautiful... and the thought of your child getting to know your parent in a way you had seemingly overlooked just made me emotional because like there is something so unique about the grandchild-grandparent relationship. you gave some of your youthful and curious spirit to your grandma! im sure those letters bring her joy and something more than a replacement for something lost

i miss my three late grandparents very dearly and am so so glad to have my grandpa and live so close to him. it feels like time spent together is never wasted, a precious gift

Never had a real relationship with my maternal grandparents before they died, and my paternals are gone now too. Please talk to your folks if you can! I wish I could
@SONGBIRDSAINT never having a relationship with grandparents is such a unique sort of pain - like you can feel a whole world of life and memories that has been out of reach from you. So weird!! like I understand why I never got to meet some people but also it feels like in some ways I never got to meet my own parents. Part of them is gone with those people too. Sometimes I say my family got lost to history because I hear tales of people and times I’ll never know because of bad endings — I blame Nixon somehow. Idk why but I do
