CATASTROPHIZING ABOUT MY 20 YEAR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

It's not even for another 5 years and idk if I'd even go, but nonetheless it is giving me the same kind of anxiety as the first day of school.

@OKWETUU_FISH I didn't - it was the summer right before the pandemic too. I had just come out so I was already feeling like a mess lol and honestly I didn't (don't?) have a super strong connection to my clas, but it is a pretty big milestone and everyone always talks about going to them. Who knows! If we even have time for reunions, in 5 years maybe I'll have my answer

@BEAR4Shm i was a drifter friend in hs so im not close with anyone either:/ i do think itd be fun to pop in out of nowhere after being totally silent tho my image of reunions is that no one has their shit together but everyone collectively agrees to act like they do and not say anything otherwise

HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS

This year I was invited to my 10th high school reunion and chose not to go. Tonight, I went with my grandfather to his 84th high school reunion. My mom drove us over the winding mountain road, straight through the heart of Shenandoah National Forest to the rural valley town my grandpa grew up in.
His high school is in a beautiful old brick building from the 1880’s. In the middle of the speeches a huge thunderstorm broke out and someone moved the speakers away from the leaking pipe above it. We were served a true country meal by a group of enthusiastic elementary school volunteer waiters: slow roasted beef, pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes with gravy, and sweet tea with peach cobbler and ice cream for dessert. Back in 1939-1941, my grandpa was a cheerleader. For the meal and reception, we were sat in the very gymnasium where he cheered for the girls basketball team.
At 102, my grandpa was the oldest graduate there and led the class song, which he still remembers even after eight and a half decades. I got to hear stories and see the smiles on the everyone’s face when they saw him arrive. If this is what a high school reunion is like, I may reconsider going in a fair few decades.

HIGH SCHOOL REUNION FACEBOOK GROUPS

as someone who only graduated from high school in 2021, i'm mostly referring to the grad classes from when my mom was in hs.
i love looking thru her senior yearbook and asking her who she liked and who was mean and then finding their facebook accounts to see what they're up to bc my mom never went to any of her reunions.
i'm begging her to take me to the next one tho bc there's nothing better than a beef that's been going for 37 years.

GOING BACK TO YOUR OLD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHEN YOU GRADUATE HIGHSCHOOL

One of my favorite grad traditions. Highschoolers get to walk through their childhood school while being high-fived by hopeful and excited elementary schoolers.
