CATASTROPHIZING ABOUT MY 20 YEAR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

It's not even for another 5 years and idk if I'd even go, but nonetheless it is giving me the same kind of anxiety as the first day of school.

@OKWETUU_FISH I didn't - it was the summer right before the pandemic too. I had just come out so I was already feeling like a mess lol and honestly I didn't (don't?) have a super strong connection to my clas, but it is a pretty big milestone and everyone always talks about going to them. Who knows! If we even have time for reunions, in 5 years maybe I'll have my answer

@BEAR4Shm i was a drifter friend in hs so im not close with anyone either:/ i do think itd be fun to pop in out of nowhere after being totally silent tho my image of reunions is that no one has their shit together but everyone collectively agrees to act like they do and not say anything otherwise

HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS

This year I was invited to my 10th high school reunion and chose not to go. Tonight, I went with my grandfather to his 84th high school reunion. My mom drove us over the winding mountain road, straight through the heart of Shenandoah National Forest to the rural valley town my grandpa grew up in. His high school is in a beautiful old brick building from the 1880’s. In the middle of the speeches a huge thunderstorm broke out and someone moved the speakers away from the leaking pipe above it. We were served a true country meal by a group of enthusiastic elementary school volunteer waiters: slow roasted beef, pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes with gravy, and sweet tea with peach cobbler and ice cream for dessert. Back in 1939-1941, my grandpa was a cheerleader. For the meal and reception, we were sat in the very gymnasium where he cheered for the girls basketball team. At 102, my grandpa was the oldest graduate there and led the class song, which he still remembers even after eight and a half decades. I got to hear stories and see the smiles on the everyone’s face when they saw him arrive. If this is what a high school reunion is like, I may reconsider going in a fair few decades.

First day of school

Even now as an old decrepit grad student and prof, the first day of school continues to fill me with wonder. What will my classes be like? Will I see anyone I know? I have a bag full of unused notebooks and pens. I somehow have not a care in the world and a feeling of dread. It’s lovely that some things stay exactly the same.

Being in school

recently i have been having a lot of dreams in relation to being in high school or college again. usually it’s an amalgamation of both together where people from both parts of my life show up. and it’s never at my old high school or college, but a better institution with better buildings. it’s been 6 years since i have been in a school environment 😂
