i was aware of but not familiar with cookie mueller and this book had been on my reading list for quite some time—i regret not picking it up sooner! really couldn’t put this one down, you have no choice but to fall in love with cookie and the way she moves about the world. a memoir, adventure tale, travelogue, ethnography, advice column, and story anthology all in one. often hilarious and at times heartbreaking. i can’t recommend this book enough!

& am reminded of when i read Walk Through Walls on the plane and suddenly wanted to throw myself against the cockpit door, naked, reciting my artist statement, engraving a pentacle on my stomach, whilst spitting pretzels at my audience (passengers) as they silently applauded my minimalist engagement of the psyche.
this is all to say i highly recommend reading her memoir.

it’s my favourite book ever. i read it every summer and have a look at my favourite paragraphs from time and time and it never fails to get to me. it’s written in second person. it’s short, sharp and sweet. it’s really lyrical and beautifully investigates love, South London and the complexities of being Black.

I was kind of surprised by how hard this hit. You don’t even need to be super interested in sea life to enjoy ! really fascinating scientific essays about ocean critters interspersed with personal memoirs from the author’s queer, mixed race experiences and somehow it all intermingles beautifully.

if i need to travel from point a to point b i may as well do it on a boat. at one point in time i did need to temporarily ban myself from taking the ferry home from work because i’d always purposely miss my stop to enjoy more time on the boat and then have to trek back an extra hour on the subway which was certainly not the most convenient. worth it though.

many times it will not go well; this is a lesson in humility and resilience and your friends will have something to laugh at. they will grow out faster than you think. when the fringe trim is a success, the world becomes a more beautiful place.
