They are so worth your time and - if you play an instrument - your music! there’s this lovely one that runs fortnightly in kings cross called el rocco that you should check out if you’re ever in Sydney or in the mood for a sing. Best way to spend a Wednesday arvo without spending money!
+ the cash only bar is a relic in todays society

Caveat that I am not a jazz expert *but* IMO the best strategy is to go to the solid if popular places like Troy Bar Weds/Fri or the paid events at 91 Living Room and keep track of the performers you like, follow them on socials and they might announce when they play at random bars you've never heard of. (There are also more dedicated divey spots like Oliver's Jazz Bar in Greenwich but cover/drinks are still a bit expensive)

I don't know about NYC specifically, but often times bars host small shows that are basically free, you're just expected buy a drink (you probably can even skip that part if you really don't wanna spend money at all). I've seen some amazing musicians that way and to me, small shows like that are way more special than larger shows.
Check out the socials of bars near you and you should find something interesting, maybe even a new small artist that you will love!

When looking up in a densely packed forest, i find there is so much beauty in the cracks where the sunlight escapes between a canopy of trees. Like maps of rivers, or veins in the arm, the space between has so much merit in its own and more, so many stories to tell. I love looking up! We should all make more of a habit of it! Wings of desire!
