I think a lot of fear is learned (noticing kids are often pretty chill with potato bugs and ants and etc) and am finding that exposure therapy, knowledge on how to identify the few dangerous species in my region, and mentally reframing things can do a lot for helping to become brave in ways that are kind. I think that genre of bravery may just be the most useful and cool. I’m at a point where I’m fine with a spider living in my home.

i was maybe 12 or 13 and my mum and i were volunteering at a farm that rescued old/abused farm animals. we were sitting in a circle with the owners and other volunteers, and they started going around the circle saying how long they had been vegan. i was not vegan, never had been vegan, and am not vegan even now, and i said that. every person there (all adults) gave me intense stares and side-eyes, and one owner told me that i should think about how much i liked animals when i was eating them. anyway, we got on to volunteering and it was going well until lunchtime. i had gotten mud in my boots, so my socks were muddy, and i was trying to clean them. two women in their 20s came over and asked me if i wanted a new pair of socks. i refused at first, but they insisted, so i said okay. they then said that the socks were out in their car, and i should come with them to get the socks out of their trunk. i said that i didn’t need them that badly, but they were very pushy about getting socks from their vehicle, which was ‘just near the end’ of the farm’ insanely long driveway. i kept refusing until i had to say that i was going to find my mum, because they still insisted. so, i got up and left (quickly) with my muddy socks. i later found out from my mum that these people shoved pedestrians in busy cities into booths with slaughterhouse videos running, in order to ‘spread awareness’. they were also infamous for their hundred-person ‘gatherings’ on their farm. i ended up not telling my mum about the two women until maybe a year ago and she was very shocked.

His name is NewBeanMeister22. 8 or so years back, when I was in college, I found out about his insane youtube channel. Basically, the lore is this: he started as a weird but normal toy review channel with his wife, but that all changed when he got a package from ebay that contained a black widow spider that had just laid eggs. Supposedly the spiders scurried into his crawlspace and infested it, and soon spread to the rest of his house, meaning he had to quarantine his dog and kids away from the spread. He was desperate to be rid of the black widows, but too stubborn to hire a professional, so he started capturing other bugs from his backyard and releasing them into his house in hopes that they would kill the black widows. To mixed results. He filmed all of this and continued to release toy reviews and travel videos even as black widows overtook his house. He got caught in drama a few years ago when he was accused of reusing old footage to fake the infestation despite having gotten rid of the spiders. So now he fessed up that they have been taken care of, yet harnesses his love of insects (and the fact that most of his viewers came to his channel to gawk at his black widow infestation) to maintain an extensive cast of pet spiders and mantises. A legend in my eyes, and a saga me and my roommate watched unfold in real time.
