These poetry & performance nights in London are absolutely incredible. I've been to a few now and each one is profoundly moving and has a real sense of community. There's such a diversity of talent each time; poetry, music, dance, puppetry, and well beyond that.
I was at one last night, which took place on a docked ship in Canary Wharf, and came away feeling very inspired. There's another happening next Sunday at the ever-reliablr George Tavern, which I wish I could go to. The collective also produces Zines and posts some video of their performances on their Instagram. P.s. there's cheaper tickets available for those who can't afford entry, no questions asked!

ABOUT A YEAR AGO WHEN I REALIZED I WAS A WRITER I BECAME OBSESSED WITH ALL THINGS BEATNIK, BEAT-CHIC, AND BOHEMIAN. ITS THE BEST WRITER CLICHE EVER. CLICHES ARE A GREAT THING, ESPECIALLY IN NEW YORK EFFING CITY. A FEW MONTHS AGO I HAD A HAPPENING, IN HONOR OF LE GREAT BEAT WRITERS AND PARTIERS. I WAS MOSTLY BLACKED OUT ON PILLS THE ENTIRE TIME, BUT THATS LE VIBE OF A HAPPENING. TYPICAL READINGS ARE BORING AND BASICALLY AN UN-CHIC ABOMINATION. A HAPPENING IS VINTAGE, MESSY, A BIG MIX OF PARTY ENERGY WITH A SALON FLAIR. WE HAD BONGO DRUMS, FOLK MUSIC, SHITTY POEMS, ARTSY PERFORMANCES. IT WAS A TOTAL SHIT SHOW BUT ALSO PEACEFUL AND FAB. I SCREAMED A BUTCHERED VERSION OF HOWL, OBVIOUSLY. IF I GET IT TOGETHER ENOUGH I'LL HAVE ANOTHER IF THERE AREN'T TOO MANY KNOCK OFFS BY THEN. YOU SHOULD ALL COME AND READ OR PLAY THE TAMBOURINE OR WHATEVER. MAKE SURE TO DRESS LIKE BOB DYLAN OR PATTI SMITH OR A DOWNTOWN CLICHE.

Can't vouch for any of these bands but here's a relatively inexpensive one in North London tonight at one of my fave independent venues... or check the Another Subculture listings for more

Koudelka was a photographer who documented Europe from the 60s onwards, recording the lives of travelling people, Soviet invasions, struggles with poverty, and more. He later became a member of the Magnum society and continued his work into old age. If you have the time, it's really worth digging into his work as he had a real eye for striking images that provide a lot of context for the situation he was in. He used to travel with very little besides a sleeping bag and camera so he often experienced the harsher side of life while on the job. At times his photos were smuggled out of the soviet borders, and published anonymously, to keep him safe. Check the link for a good starting point on Magnum's website!

I'm not obsessed with it but it's always sweet when the barista does something cool. This one yesterday made me smile because after seeing a few others I realised the guy was doing PokΓ©mon! Fairly certain mine is mew or Mewtwo, I saw him do a horsea, pikachu, and squirtle too...

Just finished up a week-long run of Shakespeare's Richard the Third and feeling so proud of everyone involved. I love acting and hope it'll become a bigger part of my life, but even with that said working on this latest production has been so inspirational. I've met and gotten to know so many fantastic people putting their all into theatre as a hobby β€” for a few of them this was their first time onstage and it was so fun watching them grow and shine as we neared opening night.
Personally, my role in the play as the Duchess of York wasn't a key character, but it was one I found massively challenging for a number of reasons β€” but once we got into live performances something clicked and I felt like with each show I learned something new about myself and the role.
I can't recommend this enough as an opportunity to meet new people, push yourself out of your comfort zone, and also guilt your friends into spending nearly three hours in a dark cramped room 😁
