A.I. as it exists currently will never be capable of truly mimicking the human mind, including the many emotions we feel on a day to day basis. Right now, A.I. is mostly just advanced algorithms that rip things from whatever its source material is or takes what it can from the wealth of all human knowledge that is the internet. Because of that, A.I. cannot grasp the human experience. It can pretend to, by pulling a post from any social media website and saying ā€œwell, when this situation happens, most people tend to feel Xā€œ but thatā€™s not real emotion, is it? However, technology is constantly evolving. If at some point in the future, some tech bro can figure out how to perfectly and consistently create digital neural networks that mimic the human brain, then yes, that A.I. might be able to feel emotion, though it will never be ā€œhuman emotionā€ as A.I.s will never be truly and completely human in the sense you and I are. So I guess it depends on what your definition of ā€œemotionā€ is. If you mean emotion as in ā€œthe full sensory and mental experience that emotions spawn in humans,ā€ then the answer is no, an A.I. will never fully experience the complexities of human emotion. If you mean emotion as in ā€œWhen X stimuli occurs, I react X way,ā€ then yes, an A.I would be capable of that. Overall, A.I. bad, humans good. For some media to peruse, Iā€™d recommend Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick (if you havenā€™t read it already) as well as anything related to Bladerunner (which is based on the aforementioned book). This is a great question, thanks for asking it!

Thanks for the detailed response! I think the question of what is emotion is super integral to the conversation. I think if we boil down emotions to reactions that are mostly culturally constructed I think youā€™re right. AI can generate emotion-like responses that in all honesty can be indistinguishable from the real organic thing in some cases. When you mentioned the idea that hypothetically if someone could mimic the neural pathways of a person we could have an AI that experiences emotion it sorta implies that the brain is the sole generator of emotion or at least the experience of them. Iā€™m not sure if even then we could classify what it generates as emotions as Iā€™m conflicted on whether the brain and mind (which I think plays a role in generating emotions) are one. Very mind/body problem vibes for sure. Iā€˜m curious about your phrasing ā€œThe full sensory and mental experience that emotions spawn in humansā€. Do you think emotion is primarily defined by the reactions it causes within us? And do you believe that these sensory and mental experiences can be fully articulated by humans?Ā  Iā€™ll definitely check out your recs thank you!

@ESOTERICPRINCESS Iā€™ve always been taught that the chemicals in the brain are what cause emotions, so that is why I brought up the hypothetical. I see where youā€™re coming from with the mind consideration, though I have always seen the brain and mind as one entity. Youā€™re right that my wording was confusing. Iā€™ve talked about this a lot in therapy. Emotions and reactions exist in a cyclical relationship, but it can go both ways. Example A: I become livid because of one thing or another, and I start to cry. Example B: I think about the current state of the world, and I become upset. What Iā€™m trying to say is, external stimuli can cause emotions AND emotions can cause external stimuli. So to answer your question (albeit not very well), both? Our reactions both define our emotions and are defined BY our emotions. Sorry if that makes no sense. On the ā€œfull articulationā€ front, I believe some emotions escape the confines of human language. I feel that I am fairly adept at expressing my emotions, but there are times where I just wave my arms around and cry/yell/make animal noises. This actually adds to the A.I. discussion, because all A.I. starts out being programmed by a human. So, if humans cannot define certain emotions, then A.I. will never be able to experience the full extent of human emotion. (How many times can you write emotion before it starts to just become static in your brain?) Thanks for this discussion!

IMO. Solution without a problem yet. I personally think AI art looks like shit too. Part of the joy of art is knowing that a human created this and trying to unpack after around that like what were the influences, what were they trying to convey. AI will never be able to explain WHY it produced something in a satisfying way. In fact, from what I can tell, it's almost IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to be able to explain how a LLM generated the answer at it did. (but I could be wrong). My response to most AI art is "wow those colors are really rich" or "this is so creepy." On the margins I think there could be some efficiency gains (stuff like "take this complicated piece of data and summarize it for human consumption") that could change industries, but I think at this point it's mostly vaporware. And if general AI is ever let out into the wild god save us all.

My #official take is that AI art generally on the whole fucking sucks. 90% of it is uninteresting slop content by brain dead techbros who have no knowledge of art or why we value it. HOWEVER!!! There is one use case where I think using AI in your art can actually elevate the work, and thatā€™s if the art itself is in some way trying to say something about AI. Luckily, thereā€™s actually a lot of things to say about AI ā€“ referencing it in your work pretty firmly places it in the current cultural landscape in super powerful way. Some examples (note that these all have pretty nihilistic / downright dystopian outlooks on modern society, maybe thatā€™s also imporyant): - Vegynā€™s album under the Headache pseudonym - some of the scenes in Conner Oā€™Malleyā€™s 103 fever short

Recently I went through a rough patch for a couple months where I was only filling about one page of my sketchbook every week and it felt like buns :( However, a couple weeks ago I started hyper-fixating on Transformers and Iā€™ve drawn so many of those stupid fucking robots Iā€™m not even lying to you. So basically what that means is try and find something that would appeal to you and draw inspiration from that! Expanding on the inspiration piece- for embroidery, I have a huge Pinterest board of things Iā€™d like to put on my jackets/jeans/shirts. Thereā€™s no shame in taking inspiration!!!! Finally, if none of these things work (and I know itā€™s easier said than done) literally just force yourself to do one creative thing a day. When Iā€˜m bored at school I draw random faces and people passing by. Just by forcing yourself to get back into the habit, hopefully that will encourage your brain to return to its former creative glory. Good luck!!!!!
