As if Uncle Neil’s original lamenting the state of our planet 🌏 wasn’t sad enough This a capella cover (which weirdly charted in the US and other countries in the 70s; I remember hearing it on pop radio in LA) is basically two minutes of heartbreak on wax.

elliott smith’s cover of “trouble”

Supposedly recorded shortly before his death, Elliott’s take on the Cat Stevens classic wasn’t published until Mike Mills’ terrific film “Thumbsucker” came out in 2005. Prescient. And so Elliott, right down to the false starts. That chord change in the bridge just melts/breaks my heart. I miss him almost every day. 💔
