September is a fickle month in Michigan, so you could have 80 degrees or the odd snow day, and by the end of the month the first leaves are changing color in preparation for a gorgeous October. It’s also back-to-school time which makes me feel hopeful and optimistic even while simultaneously feeling the “oh shit the calendar year is almost over” pressure!! Feels like an exciting time for change, predictable or otherwise.

Biased but it’s my wedding anniversary in October, and my daughter’s birthday — two events to celebrate. The leaves start to fall, the cold lingers in and stays for a bit. Mornings are a crisp 50°, days hit a high of 65° only to settle back to the 50° range at night. The suns sets earlier, the clothes get chunkier, the drinks get warmer. The plans for the holidays begin, the slow degrade of your work ethic also kicks off. Walks become enjoyable. More outdoors activities, apple picking and hiking and dinner parties and fire pits. It’s a wonderful, magical month.

september: it’s back to school! it’s still warm from the summer but there’s a chill in the air. campus is invigorated and i’m not bored of my classes or scared of exams yet. i have enough free time that i can see my friends before i drown in assignments. there are back to school activities and i have money to burn from my summer job october: the fear of midterms has set in, but its offset by the fact that i’m watching a horror movie every single night. i’m dressing like a weirdo at school and everyone has gotten used to it. the leaves turned orange and fell off the trees in less than 24 hours, but it looked nice while it lasted. i work weekends at a haunted house

the prospect of fall excites me. But only the prospect. Because I live in Texas so we just don’t get a great fall. But September.. the hope is still there

bc it’s what I originally wanted when I first went to college at 17 but I was scared to make writing my job and got a B.S. in Nutrition instead lol Now the goal is an eventual PhD in Victorian Literature but I’m just happy to have made it through this part at 32! Stacked is everything I read in my English courses—barely pictured are the 5 stuffed accordion folders of other reading materials under my chair haha
