i always see tons of recs on here to consume media more purposefully and consume more intellectual media, and i am the biggest advocate of purposeful consumption but sometimes i just wanna watch mild brainrot content and not feel bad about it. it's ok to not be intellectual at all times!!! sometimes the purpose can be just pure entertainment sincerely someone who has quite pretentious tastes usually and has 2 masters degrees about pretentious subjects 🫶🏻

To me purposeful consumption isn't about engaging with intellectual media. It's more about pushing back against indiscriminate consumption which is often tied to keeping up with the zeitgeist. Right now my main show is King of the Hill. I'm going through it slowly and often it's in the background while I'm doing chores. It's funny, I like the characters, and often doesn't take too much attention to follow. But it's the only show I'm watching.

omg you haven’t seen that film? you haven’t heard that music? you haven’t read that book? THAT’S NORMAL!!!! i feel like there is so much social pressure to consume whatever media makes you niche and unique and cultured and i’m OVER IT. it’s normal to have not seen every cool movie or show on the planet or heard every album to ever exist. consuming media is something that should be enjoyable and happen gradually over time, not something you force to meet arbitrary cool person standards. i’m so done with feel a social obligation to consume certain things. i’ll get to it when i get to it! let me have my taste, im okay with not knowing everything!

I don’t kneed to know all the lore or details about said thing to like it. I don’t know how many kids the author has, or where the show originated from. Let me just digest my media on a basic fan level. I can enjoy things without knowing everything about it!!!

i've been posponing so many movies and tv shows on my watchlist that i ended up with 4 digits so i said fuck it. i just watch whatever, no matter my mood, or being made by that director, or seing a new tiktok about that show. so what it doesn't fit with "the vibe" of what i just watched 5 minutes ago? the satisfaction of experiencing a new idea, portrayed in a different way, said by a new voice (new to me at least) it really makes my day. i know i am not saying anything new to you: that you should enjoy every new piece of art because it's art; but i say it coming from a place where i used to spend all my time concentrating on developing my own unique taste and ended up sabotaging my overall experince with cinema and art in general, which made me more resentful with new things, and just made me overall sad for the way i ended up watching movies. i think the most important think i learned is no matter what watch things with an open mind. And no mater what remind yourself to do that, remind your friends to do that, remind it to strangers, remind it to everyone. maybe i am not really touching anyone with this post but i know how important it was for me to see a reassuring message like this in my past. it didn't change the way i tought at the time but it stuck with me. maybe no one will see this post and that's ok beacuse i wrote it for me.

this idea of "you don't owe anyone anything" came about through the social media therapists that try to diagnose complete strangers with a multitude of issues and complexes. all it has done has made selfish people more selfish and divided us as a community. you do not owe everyone everything, but if you consider yourself part of a community, a society, you do owe everyone something. at a base level you owe people kindness, respect (as long as they haven't lost the right to it), and basic human decency. you owe your loved ones even more. stop being selfish and rude in the name of treating your so-called "people pleasing."

if one more person tells me to turn one of my hobbies into a business i'm gonna go berserk. is nothing sacred in this late stage capitalist hellscape?
