For so long i’ve had a physical repulsion to activities i’m bad at which really hindered my ability to get better and be expose to new things. Which is so lame and ego-driven. Now i’m bracing being a novice and trying to feel lucky about getting a chance to learn something new. Being the worst at something is kinda a nice spot to be in.

I recently started dance and painting classes, which I’m horrible at. It has made me embrace failure and become friends with it-but in a low-stakes kind of way.

i took my first wheel-throwing class today and i'm so bad at it. there's nothing more humbling. it's like exposure therapy for your ego. it forces you to embody "beginner's mind". there's nothing wrong with being new to something, and the awkwardness of it is kind of sublime!!

I relate to this heavily. There's lots of reasons why you might be stuck in this loop, but for me, it's because I'm a perfectionist. If you're like me, you have to accept that you're going to be bad at whatever it is you're wanting to do. You're going to suck, and that's a good thing because you can't be good at something unless you get through being bad at it. If you were given Gifted and Talented status as a child, you were probably deprived of this lesson and will need to learn it now. After you've acquired the cheapest and most basic version of whatever materials are needed, make the next item on your to-do list some version "suck at doing the thing".
