short form video content is destroying our brains, collectively. It won’t always be this way, though. we are lost in the sauce. there needs to be a revolution. something that brings it to a head to end. It’s really bad guys

the revolution is happening one of the things that convinces me of this is the proliferation of new "dumbphones" — non-smartphones that are usable for real life — like the Lightphone 3

I find myself getting annoyed if a video on Instagram is longer than I anticipated it would be. Which is stupid because if I like the content, why do I want it to be so short?

Hypernormalisation. The government, financiers and technological utopians use short form social media to shrink our attention spans to establish a simpler "fake world" for the benefit of large corporations and is kept stable by neoliberal govts. this is why social media and younger folks are so focused on identity politics rather than forming a coalition against the ultra wealthy and effectuating any real change. conquer and divide is their strategy and its working sadly. idk if we will ever recover.

Unfortunately, it seems likely that somehow Tik Tok, Meta, and Trump are already in cahoots, which means Tik Tok will never be the same of course, but it also means there's something going on behind closed doors. With Shou reposting MAGA propaganda and now the signing in to Tik Tok through Meta appearing, and even more, I don’t think it’s looking great for the future of Tik Tok. Trump is not "saving" Tik Tok. I think a couple very important things are happening. First, they're gaining control of the information that we have been sharing with each other on Tik Tok. They don't like how quickly we can spread news and info, and in turn how quickly we can rally against things happening. Second, Trump will use "saving Tik Tok against what the government banned" as an excuse to do what he wants. He's establishing that his orders, even those going against what passed through congress, are the ones that are "correct" and should be followed. He's hoping that the majority of Americans see this act as purely a good thing he did for the people. We've been played. Our country is in danger. People who support Trump are supporting his numerous actions that have been unconstitutional and against what this country actually stands for, all because they are brainwashed. Unfortunately, when (not if) it comes out that there is a connection to Meta/Zuckerberg/ Trump/or a group that works with any of these entities, we'll know that it's the end of the Tik Tok era. Tik Tok will begin collecting and using our data in the same way Meta does, in the same way it was once accused of doing, all to turn a profit for those who will benefit from it. The algorithm will change and the content we see will change. Al will become more prominent than it already is and will learn from content creators, comments, and messages. I hope as many of us as possible can remain steadfast in staying away from Meta, X, and even Tik Tok if it comes down to it and continuing to pursue decentralized social media forms that aren’t controlled by one person, that don’t inhibit free speech and the sharing of information, that don’t block certain news, and don’t turn into channels for state media like I think Tik Tok might.

And unfortunately it’s a capitalistic one. Economic return takes precedence over everything, which means if something starts off as this bright pocket of creativity and uniqueness, it’ll eventually either get bought over by larger media conglomerates and dissolved into another bland property that is safe and guaranteed to turn a profit OR go bankrupt from refusing to conform. From a filmmaking perspective, that’s why it’s much easier to greenlight reboots, sequels and renew 50 seasons of reality TV** than invest in new ideas. They’re less risky and already have a track record for making money based on the performance of their predecessors. It’s endemic and leads to very unimaginative pieces of media. This type of model is quite literally the antithesis to creativity and it’s only a matter of time before it bursts. The real question is, what can we start doing now to build the foundations for new media-development practices that balance creative innovation and financial feasibility? (I don’t have an answer yet, but this is something that’s been on my mind a lot lately) **No shade on reality TV– it can be hella entertaining, but I cant ignore the fact that there’s been a boom in this type of content since the pandemic and in the eyes of streaming platforms (aka Netflix being the biggest culprit), it’s much more prolific and infinitely easier to churn out than investing in developing an original limited series.

a movie that was not fully realized but became a cult classic because of it. Favorite moments: Corey being a “speed addict“ but there was legit one clip of her popping a vague looking white pill Rex 😂😂😂 straight outta 1969 the multiple screaming matches that seem to arise out of basically nowhere the amount of “band of susans” posters around the record shop? The production designer must’ve run out of options.
