Poetry is often short and so we just skim over it and are left underwhelmed. Sometimes we need to make ourselves hear and feel it more, I find that reading the poem out loud really helps with this! Also maybe try to find videos of poets reading their own poems. (I’ve attached a Mary Oliver reading, I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like Mary Oliver haha) Also remember that ā€œpoetryā€ is such a huge and nebulous literary form and that you may well dislike a lot of it (I detest so much poetry that I find it a little embarrassing as a poet). Just because you don’t like a poem, or a hell of a lot of poems, doesn’t mean you don’t like poetry, you’ve just not found the poems you like. If you find one poem that you like, find more from that same poet. If you like a poet, look at who their fans like, or who the poet has cited as inspiration. You’re allowed to find lines you love but not like other lines in the same poem. It’s all worth it when you find one line that hits right through you. ā€œyou do not have to be good…you just have to let the soft animal of your body love what it lovesā€.

i had a poetry professor a while back who LOVED found poetry and got me into the habit of writing down any phrase that i encounter and found funny or interesting or profound or wtv and anyway it's my most prized possession. after you start collecting quotes and phrases and words they line up in your notes app and it makes a beautiful profound collage of your life, currently the one in my phone is almost 200 lines long, but here are the first 30 or so lines for reference: i was outside the matrix with watercolor at list why is there rice? i didn’t eat rice?? i didn’t sell out i bought it it was one o’clock forever i’ve done seen rhode island bring back the swan wide eyed babe you’re gonna carry that weight ambiguous sentences sun glitter i have sick ambiance in my room bruh and im like wait that’s the roofie this must be what it’s like to have a child that’s stupid free prometheus is the wind taking my cigarette i like his name, i will remember his name i am trumps little baby boy forrest into lumber farm bad things come in threes so you should break a match one of the worst parts of the pig farm i didn’t know killing children was a jew thing i love your opinions they remind me of state media

being traditionally cool is really quite boring and iterative, and it’s actually very cool and sexy to geek out about something you like or share bits of knowledge on a topic you’re passionate about

i had it for a little over a year until i was like wow this is actually terrible! i genuinely think it has negatively impacted society by ruining people’s attention spans, having a horrific algorithm, and most of all by the most mind-numbing or outright harmful trends - fake words that people now use IRL (ā€œunaliveā€), trad wife tiktok, shein hauls, body-focused fitness vids that encourage fatphobia and unhealthy habits, shallow political/feminist theory and queer discourse, ā€œalpha maleā€ podcaster tiktok, encouraging overconsumption in general, trends ruining local spots or niche things… the list goes on
