literally 15 years ago as a kid I was always told to use fake names on the internet to protect my privacy and identity bc your digital footprint can get big VERY quick.
As an adult I had a weird cyberstalking situation happen to me and it had me rly reflective on my digital footprint; thank god it’s over, but believe me when I say we don’t need more randos being able to do a google search, and easily be able to find out what city ur in/who you work for/who your friends are

Hear me out.
Many of us have gleefully chuckled at Timothée Chalamet’s pre-fame YouTube vids, but there’s a lesson in them. His seemingly harmless digital footprint has followed him for years and there’s much fodder in it for us to paw through!
I’ve been on a mission to reclaim and tamp down my online footprint for years and one way to measure my progress is to periodically type my name into the old search bar. I was delighted to see books I worked on, articles I’m quoted in, my website, a few obits, and little else. Given that I once had multiple blogs, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, MySpace, and Twitter, it was a relief to feel like I have a more nuanced and controlled image / narrative of my online self.
Yeah it’s a little navelgazey, but I’m on the job market and in my 30s, so it makes sense to be on top of this stuff.

I have to disagree with the people who say that we need to “stay” and “fight“ for IG to be a better platform because in actuality, it’s our presence and engagement that gives them data, and therefore money. As long as they have those 2 things, they make their bottom line and won’t really care about its users desires unless they’re making a move for the optics.
If we REALLY want to hold them accountable, we need to impact the money they make, which means permanently deleting or marking your account as inactive & never coming back. They’ll only care if they’re bleeding money— so make them bleed.

Now more than ever we gotta show up for the causes we care about!!! Online reposting and presence is good but it doesn't get the full job done unless we show up and show out!!!! Show up to your city/town hall meetings and be an active participant if you are able, bc if we don't speak IRL we don't exist
