I was talking to a friend who’s visiting home after being abroad and we both agree that not seeing familiar trees fills you with a certain longing/loneliness. I love western red cedars!

-willow tree behind my parents’ house they cut down when I was young bc it was at risk of crushing us. I remember crying. I remember my grandad working on hacking up the stump every time he came to visit long after it seemed like he should be physically able to do that kind of labor. -birch trees on my childhood neighbor‘s property. I liked to listen to the leaves and peel off bark to “write” on with a stick. -magnolia tree in our front yard in Philly, especially in spring when there would be petals all over the porch and stoop steps -several trees in the Woodlawn cemetery in Philly. I would go take long walks there one fall when I was feeling really down and would visit my favorite trees each time. Some grave markers are so old, they’re being swallowed whole by trees growing around them. One tree looks like ten or twelve smaller trees that have all grown together. there was one small tree that was always full of sparrows -the japanese maple on my current block, especially in fall. made me smile every morning I saw it even though I knew it meant winter was coming. Sorry for the novel. I love this question, thank you for asking it.

watching the tree change and being there for all it’s subtle stages of browning and blooming is a beautiful experience that can yield great appreciation and joy. i believe that spending time in nature when the seasons are changing can provide much comfort and relief to seasonal depression and other feelings that come when the days grow dark and cold.

I’m too dear with lovely things. I keep the brooch my 2nd grade teacher gave me in a box, safe, and because of this I’ve never worn something I really like! I recently decided I needed to wear my brooch with the sweater I finished knitting this weekend. It made it feel even more special. :)
