This book was part of my challenge for myself to read more books from queer perspectives this year. It’s now become one of my favourite books, period.
I feel like this book speaks primarily about identity, queerness, grief and drug use. But, it also explores these in a world where capitalism doesn’t exist any longer, which I found really brought depths to the story in unexpected ways for me.

heartwrenching from start to finish. a warm hug for someone like me.
i can’t really criticize the writing of this book, just because it’s the uniqueness and importance of this story that sets it apart. it is a story that absolutely needed to be written. what’s even more amazing is that such simple writing could capture the lived intricacies of gender and sexuality in so many shades.
i had never felt seen like this.

My debut novel came out last year in the US, UK, and France, and I was struck by the panels/talks where people kept asking me about queer joy. I vouch for queer joy, of course, as a queer AF person whose art/writing delves inward in a cheeky way. BUT I write from the gay abyss, the mix of rage and melancholy that is just as important, valid, and—dare I say—triumphant. The crayon box is important because every single day, love affair, conversation won’t be a joyous corny ass love parade, but a melange of all things brutal and beautiful. So rage against the rainbow machine, loves 🖤

💖compliment the barista‘s cool jumper. the nice earrings the checkout chick is wearing. the colour of your cousins nail polish. stop it with the ‘you look great’ when people lose weight or ‘you look so much better’ when someone’s skin finally clears up. It’s 2025 and people deserve to ACTUALLY feel good when you give them a compliment.
