instead of installing the youtube app, make a shortcut on your phone that opens youtube in a new tab on your browser why? because there aren't ads!! (if your browser has adblocker, that is...) HOWEVER there's one feature i like in the youtube app that i like that's missing from browser: tapping fullscreen automatically rotates the video, ignoring "portrait orientation lock". To make a video truly fullscreen in browser, you have to manually swipe down and unlock it, and then re-lock it after you're done. My solution to this (and a bonus rec!!) is to set back tap to lock rotation (settings > accessibility > touch > back tap). Now you open a video, make it full screen, tap the back of your phone 3 times and woah it flips to fullscreen. No fumbling around with 'control center'. People are impressed. Tap 3 times again when you're done and it flips back to normal. swag

literally don't know how I managed using youtube on mobile before this - not having ads and being able to lock my screen is already huge but auto-skipping sponsor spots is insane

A friend of mine reminded me of how intrusive and satanic the constant ads on YouTube are these days, and, yeah, he was right. Eliminating the need to watch double ads has made being on the app more enjoyable almost INSTANTLY--especially since I'm on the site all damn day. I guess it comes with YouTube music and stuff as well, but it's really the ad-less experience that makes it worth it.

usually when i’m studying, drawing, making zines or even writing i watch youtube as background noise. you can pick from different mixtapes, radios, and even have ads and videos from the 90s play at the same time. all on the same website. this is a game changer.

Changed my perspective on so much--namely money and history. It's shocking how so much of the mainstream story of where money came from is false conjecture. For instance, we are told that societies start out bartering for goods and then develop money to make trade easier... but actually Graeber shows in no society has bartering ever predated coinage. The actual ways societies have historically dealt with exchange of goods and services are diverse and often more humanistic. Could it be that the mainstream narrative is merely justification for the inevitability of the free market? šŸ¤” Definitely want to re-read because there's lots more too

I like that you called it a "short circuit"—I feel like you can just say "Woah sorry just short circuited" and move on. I think it would make you seem cool and comfortable with your flaws and put others at ease
