Was both a little young and just not interested in all the major series when they were coming out (i.e. Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent), but I’m in my “teen girl” era and I’m revisiting all of them. I may poke so much fun at Twilight but I also ride hard for it. Bought the Twilight Forever box set and my old coworkers and I are doing a group read of the books. Feeling very #blessed

When I really think about it, I owe so much to this series….. Peeta Mellark I know you like an old friend… Cheesy ya ya maybe I’m a Gen Z Potterhead about The Hunger Games but it’s hard for me to really articulate the depth of this series impact on me. Not just content wise, but it was my first real ~obsession~ and that in itself is a special thing for any young girl. Re-reading it as an adult was one of the most joyous experiences in the past few years of my life, and tbh, I’m not short on joyous experiences. Coming back to a really important story for you during formative years AND it being genuinely GOOD is fucking awesome. I have mixed feelings about all this prequel business but I’ll always ride for the original trilogy Katniss and Peeta are literally old friends of mine

my absolute favorite book as a kid was trial by journal by kate kline, and as a tween it was the year of secret assignments, both of which are a combo of letters/emails/diary entries etc I also liked speculative fiction/more grounded sci fi and fantasy: -heir apparent by vivian vande velde, a vr middle school novel -12 impossible things before breakfast by jane yolen, a series of creepy/fantastical short stories -the true meaning of smekday by adam rex, a fun romp of an alien invasion novel from the perspective of a teenage girl My number one rec is the book when you reach me by rebecca stead!! just a beautiful coming of age novel about friendship and love and also (unexpectedly) time travel. i haven’t reread most of the others in ages but I revisit this one every few years. (Also possibly a controversial opinion, but if you never read twilight it might be worth it for the cultural experience lol)

I read the trilogy for the first time in 2019. I was really surprised and impressed by the complexity of these books. I think they were some of the last good YA books and also unknowingly were the precipice the publishing industry would topple from. It's not Suzanne Collins fault everyone said oh my god, we're doing districts. The movies don't capture what makes these books special; they capture what makes it marketable. I enjoy them but don't approve. The distance between the two is too sad. For me, it's so pleasurable to trace the obvious lineage of this series. The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, then The Long Walk by Richard Bachman (Stephen King), two of my favorite works, then The Hunger Games. Every author wanting more than the previous one gave. If you haven't read in a while, these might get you going again. Digestible, approachable, and honestly deeply affecting. As a connoisseur of dystopia, this tastes just fine.

NOT a big non fiction reader but I will always pick up something that catches my eye (don’t judge a book by its cover, but also like sometimes do). Crying in H Mart - Michelle Zauner (Japanese Breakfast) made me ugly cry at work. honorable mentions: Mean Baby - Selma Blair I’m Glad My Mom Died - Jeanette McCurdy Tuesdays With Morrie - Mitch Albom In the Dream House - Carmen Maria Machado Down the Drain - Julia Fox Cultish - Amanda Montell Maybe You Should Talk to Someone - Lori Gottlieb Flesh & Blood - N West Moss

Finding a recycled appreciation for physical media again as someone who grew up in the early 00’s. I miss blockbuster! redbox (when it was good)! anybody remember GameFly? I still check out movies from the library, but especially with companies owning and having the ability to remove media from their platform at their greedy, corporate will - I’ve started buying my favorite movies, shows, and CDs again :)
