Being a Midwesterner in any place but the Midwest feels so existential. In the city, especially. Take that and run. Explore.

Leaving the comforts of the familiar is not easy, often comes with great sacrifice, isolation, discomfort, anonymity, and sense of disconnect. It takes a lot of courage and momentum to start over. I left my hometown when I was 18 and mostly never looked back. Sometimes there's no rationale why a place isn't right for you. Sometimes you spend so much time on the run, you wonder if it's you you're running from. But sometimes you run far enough to find yourself in new territory that finally feels like home. I have nothing but love for where I come from fr and romanticize all the best parts of it, visiting from time-to-time with nostalgic, poetic glee. But sooner or later that feeling creeps in and it's just so obvious that I cannot stay. I don't belong and it's not in an angsty teenage way, but in a real, factual, this is not where I serve out my purpose kind of way. The world is a big big place. Travel, explore, rent, sublet, gig, study, improvise. Find your coordinates, do whatever it takes. Cities have a soul and you deserve to find yours.

I grew up in a suburb in IL and definitely knew I would get out of there and move to the “big city” aka Chicago asap. So, I did that, and then the person I was deeply in love with moved to Denver.
Eventually, my partner convinced me to move out of Chicago (kicking and screaming). I honestly did not love Colorado at first, but it‘s been 7 years it has grown on me and I’m glad I came here. However, we still aren’t sure this is where will stay permanently and always toy around with the idea of living somewhere else.
It’s fun challenging yourself to leave your comfort zone - your network of friends, family, colleagues. It’s nice to have the option of solidarity, as well. I know some people are cool with living in the same place their whole life, but I would have regrets.
The world is such a fun place - get out there and explore! See what calls to you, and lean into that. Once you make a big leap like moving away, you learn who you really are and what you’re capable of. You will meet people and have experiences along the way that you might not have by staying home.

It’s so fckn chill to care for people. Go ahead, cry when an old person trips in the street. It is not a weak spot but a sign something much larger within you.

A nice fog. Not smog. Still concerning timing given the season but more naturally occurring.
