I’ve adored this album since high school. Love the instrumentation and the way the vocalists unapologetically go for it at every turn.
My favorites are Running Away, I Still Love You, the title track, Cincinnati Growl and Stranded in the Jungle.

I first heard “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” and somewhat instantly was enthralled. The rolling hi-hat entrances and always leads me to feel like a bigger beat is going to erupt, yet the song just rolls along and only gradually builds with grandeur towards the back quarter. Upon further listens, more songs have enchanted me and kept me listening on a regular basis. If you like this album, it’ll likely lead you towards Donny Hathaway’s self titled album, Isaac Hayes’ Hot Buttered Soul and Bill Withers’ Just As I Am.

LOVE this album, no skips for me—reminds me of Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, The Beach Boys… 60s/70s, Laurel Canyon-Rock-vibes. Especially loving “Back On You,” a sweet anthem/ode to family 🩷

as the years go by i realized how much this dude has inspired me. somehow his songs captures the essence of night time, syrupy mysterious nocturnal grooves. it’s hard to recommend a proper entry point into his catalogue too, because there’s so much and to me it’s all good. though i always fall back on his solo records “bete noir” & “boys & girls.” it has the super hit “slave to love” obviously - but the other tracks are just as juicy - “windswept“ is a personal fav. each song features a different heavy hitter guitarist from the era too - which is why i’m so obsessed with it. he’s like a sweaty laid back lounge singer serenading you at 3AM, meanwhile these guitarists are just shredding behind him.
last saturday, i played a show and to get myself in the zone, i popped on “boys & girls” on the drive over. when i finished my set, a friend asked about the drum machine in one song and i said i took a cue from ferry and he recommended his 2010 record “olympia” which i somehow had never heard and now i’m currently obsessed with it. when i was packing up my gear the dj just put on another track of his. the next day at work, to sustain my post-show high i put on roxy music, and a customer i usually never talk to wound up sticking around telling me how much they love him. anyways i love that he‘s kind of my spirit guide following me around at the moment and highly recommend doing a deep dive into his world if you haven’t done so already…

I don’t understand how yall end up at these random ass places you do, come across the books on ancient polyrhythmic science or whatever you read, listen to those indescribably niche tracks I’ve never heard of before or since, or host art installations from your makeshift garage, but I love hearing about every little bit of it, beyond fascinating to know all your stories and passions and the things that occupy ya mind and keep you alive. It’s like a big canvas comprised of different jagged pieces that all add up to a whole.
I’ve only been on the app for two weeks or so and it’s already partly helped me heal from a lotta past grief and pain so I’m grateful to interact with yall.

It’s cool to learn new things, it’s cool to develop some new skills. It’s cool to be able to access a whole bunch of data and knowledge at your fingertips.
Don’t let some guy on a podcast become your father figure or give you financial advice or try to anoint you with another monolithic identity not too dissimilar from the one you vowed to leave behind.
