It’s about a guy finding a manuscript about a documentary that might not exist, about a house that shouldn’t exist, all wrapped in layers of footnotes, hidden messages, and pure existential dread. If you like books that mess with your head—literally and figuratively—read this.

Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk, aka the guy who wrote/directed the movie fightclub 🤫) The book is about a bunch of random folks that respond to an ad in the paper about a luxurious writers retreat, where they'll be given the space and sunshine to write their 'great masterpiece.' Except the peace and quiet is too much pressure, so they decide to wreck havoc and sabotage each other. Most interestingly, the format of the book is broken into a main-story line, poems, and short-stories from each of the characters as you're introduced to their masterpiece. It's total hell, totally funny, and gave me all of the unsettling vibes and undercurrents I get from watching White Lotus. Like a bomb is about to go off. P.S. there is one short-story called 'guts' that is the most diabolically gross writing I've ever read. You can go find that for yourself on the web. (its the 3rd chapter of the book if you want to avoid it)

debut novel from the author of “A Little Life”, this book is written from the perspective of an obnoxious, morally questionable, but undeniably brilliant doctor/scientist who goes to a small island to study a society in which the inhabitants have discovered a form of immortality— with the drawback that the body is preserved while the mind continues to age and deteriorate, making them perhaps more animal than human. i’m halfway through and the book is grotesquely detailed and multilayered— we are introduced to the “author” of the memoir first by the announcement of his imprisonment for abusing one or some of his 43 adopted children from the island that he studied. the writing is so creative and the premise is so insane, i’m excited to see where it goes!
