To be honest what I've realized is that you need multiple sources to cover what social media was giving you. Not only to actually get unbiased news but also to cover different topics. I've started listening to The Fucking News, which is good for daily political coverage in the US, and he is good about linking everything in the text of the newsletter so it's easy to fact check (got this rec from bee1000). There are also a ton of independent journalists on substack that can probably cover whatever news needs you might have. I'm personally on the lookout for a good health/science news source because that's another topic I want to keep up with. If you wanted international news you'd probably also need another source. I guess my main recommendation would be substack. (There are also a ton of recs about this topic in related recs under your ask.)

Newspaper archives are great to look at random events and also see how people at the time reacted to them!! Maybe old magazines/films could be cool too? There are also so many different blogs on Substack which look at different bits of history - like https://www.africanhistoryextra.com/?utm_source=global-search, https://florencehrs.substack.com/, and https://15thcfeminist.substack.com/. Definitely browse on Substack to see what's on offer and what style/topics interest you the most! For more general blogs, https://publicdomainreview.org/ and https://daily.jstor.org/ look into quite niche topics. Also the podcast 'The Rest is History' has done loads of episodes on many different topics! Have fun <33

I read way too many substacks — 350 plus subscriptions at last glance. I was reading so many that I started a substack about the interesting things I read. Subscribe for a bi-weekly dose of the finest the net has to offer and stay for the occasional guides to specific subjects. The recommended list to there are some strong examples I read anytime they hit the inbox.

I was reading so many of them I started a substack about other substacks. We keep it interesting. Lots of great ones out there, but if I had to pick two as launch pads I would look at Deepculture and The Aspiring Generalist to get going. Besides the Zeitgeist Distilled of course.

There's nothing like seeing the city from a plane windows. Sparkling like stars down there. The little people in their little cars and twinkling homes. Feels so bittersweet and human somehow.

More specifically, watching your favorite rom com and then your crush's favorite rom com (is there an adult word for crush), back to back at the same time as they are watching them. But instead of the social exhaustion of video calling you just text while you watch them. Even better you guys like each other mutually, so it should be exhilerating, but they cannot and will not be with you so instead it's just a lesson in your terrible self restraint. Exhilerating anyway. Good movies, good conversation. Unbeatable.
