last week i went to my local post office to send a letter and buy some stamps. i really enjoy going to the post office, but this trip felt different. i walked into the post office. it was completely empty and dimly lit. STAR 98.9 was playing on a radio. i waited for five minutes at the counter before i was helped. during those five minutes i felt a wave a nostalgia and peace. the wooden cathedral ceiling, dim lights, and sheer outdatedness of the building made me feel light and airy. i can really explain why or how i felt this way, but i highly recommend visiting your local post office.

The scent of cardboard drapes over me like a warm blanket. The sun shines through grand windows, highlighting golden each caramel board of smooth waxed wood-- is it oak? A cacophony of keyboard clicks and packing tape scratches fills the air. "Where are you shipping to?" "Priority first-class?" "Please fill out this brief survey... Next!" The room is simple but the essence is untouchable. There is one of these in almost every town, a smiling face behind each counter. If you are here then you are connected to the rest of the world.

The United States Postal Service is, second to the Department of Motor Vehicles, my favorite American institution. I'm a hoarder, I order a lot of things off eBay, so I'm always looking out for the mailman. Rain or shine! And I have so much reverence for those who work in the actual post office behind the counter. I'm always impressed by the intense emotions they can inspire in customers standing in line--panic, fatigue, stress, fury, ego-mania, depression, denial...I also really loved Post Office by Charles Bukowski when I read it in 2013. I wonder if it holds up.

Nothing is sweeter than spontaneous mail!! Go to your local post office, buy some stamps, sit down, monologue your current feelings/thoughts/ideas/drama/complaints on paper and send it off. If you're lucky, your friends will write you back and if you're like me, you can hoard every letter you've ever received and then read them back and revel in your own nostalgia.

perhaps i am a little bit biased, but joining my university's radio station was the best decision i have ever made. i have made so many friends and discovered music i wouldn't have found on my own. my radio station has a collection of over 35,000 CDs that we play from and there's so much cool stuff in there. call into your local radio station too! request a song or just tell the DJ you like what they're playing.

i swam competitively in high school and i've recently taken it up again. it's a great form of cardio and is pretty low impact. unless you're fancy and have waterproof headphones, swimming is a good time to ponder and think about important things. it's kind of mindless and doesn't require a lot of thought once you're into it.

you don't see a lot of sidewalk etiquette these days. i feel like there are unspoken rules of walking on the sidewalk. some of these rules include: -if you're walking in a group and taking up the entire sidewalk , move over when someone walks past you -walk on the right side!! -look up from your phone -they are called sideWALKs for a reason. no bikes or scooters on the sidewalk. feel free to add more and bring back sidewalk etiquette!!
