An absolute classic, I do recommend all Satoshi Kon movies, and his serialized anime Paranoia Agent. But I would start with his biggest classic Perfect Blue. The animation is beautiful, the character designs look very distict and each location feels very specific, specially Mima's room, giving a real sense of personhood to the character. The story features Kon's critique of not only Japanse mass entertainment, but celebrity culture in general. It feels specially relevant in curret days where the concept of having a persona separate from yourself feels more and more common for most people.

trar it's crazy to know that people actually remember and use the recs hihi. It's crazy good, the slow build up, his ability to direct attention. I have a soft spot for mysteries/thrillers with different focused characters. And of course the animation, the detective dream sequence is crazy

worldonfire right!!! It's so good!! The way Kon is able to develop the pace and draw you in is amazing! And comparing how his movies are raved about online, I see so little praise directed towards paranoia agent, it was one of the best anime I ever watched, even if I had to take breaks from time to time because it was so intense.

My all-time favorite film is Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue. No other movie goes deep into avatars, alter egos, and the unraveling of one’s identity after stepping into the dark side of entertainment quite like this one. It’s beautiful and incredibly dark. It feels especially relevant in today’s digital age.

I finally watching Perfect Blue after being recommended it for years whenever I talked about fandom / obsession / the internet, which is a lot — it did not disappoint! Truly horrific and brilliant and unique. I didn’t read too much about it beforehand, and I recommend going in the same way, and coming out just as confused. I love finishing a film and immediately searching for articles and blogs and reviews. (The exception to this would be if you need to check trigger warnings… I would do that(!) for sure.)

One of the things I like the most about Pi.fyi and the current scale of users is that it's still noticeable when a rec was inspired by another. Sometimes the rec directly mentions the other, but other times you can kinda assume that reading an especific thing here triggered a memory or an ideia. It's very cute and interesting to notice the small influences interacting with other humans online can have.
