Literally have a conversation - ask yourself questions about why you can’t do something and answer them. And know that our brains are terrible at predicting how we will feel after doing something. We’re down and think about going for a walk, which has lifted our spirits before, and our brains tell us it won’t make a difference. Our brains tell us we’ll be happier with some new thing, but when we get the thing we are not happier. I am like you and have a difficult time choosing to change. My brain fights it, too! It sucks.

Typically it boils down to forming habits you aspire to have. Which is infinitely more difficult than it sounds unfortunately. Especially if you aren’t already aware of what causes what you don’t like about yourself. That takes therapy and introspection. Just remember that at the end of the day change can’t happen over night, or at least the change that counts. Give yourself grace and time to evolve, because at the end of the day thats what life’s journey is all about.

I’ve been chronically socially anxious for most of my adult life, struggled to really break out of a shell and only had inner confidence amongst people who engaged with me initially. and trust me, the hardest part will always be the first step, because you’re almost programmed to think of those branching paths of ā€œwhat if this happens?ā€ My main advice is to let those paths exist, but immediately throw them away, even the ones that look positive. because your brain will always take these ideas you come up with in your head and try to twist them, make you poke holes in them until they seem unappealing, or even worse, make them feel like they could end in disaster. the more you dwell on uncertainty, the more you’ll forget why you wanted to do something in the first place. and my other bit of advice is, if you feel it, lock it in. if you want something to happen, say you will do it, and just keep it there. don’t even think about what it could lead to, just say ā€œI want to do x, so I will do xā€. from there, nothing can hurt you, you can’t hurt yourself, and even if it goes kaput, you can say ā€œI did x.ā€ finally, maybe a slightly dumber bit of advice, is pick a song to listen to before doing something you would normally back out of, like it’s a hypeman. mine is ā€œchampagne coastā€ by blood orange, mainly because it makes me feel like a Main Character wishing for the best!

I’m 50, I say because that makes me unusual in this context. I paid [redacted] for a ticket to the Eras Tour after listening to tswift for 3 weeks, and it was worth it. In second grade my teacher gave kids birthday spankings over her knee, and in sixth grade my teacher told my mom I hadn’t blossomed yet. I’m a good friend, mostly to people on the internet. I’m good at conversing with strangers. I’m usually the oldest person at the show but don’t feel like it. I’m good at being helpful. I’m sarcastic and funny and make myself laugh. I’m a good graphic designer and a conscientious driver. I’m a good photographer and I can successfully follow recipes. I don’t use my Peloton enough. I did a lot of caregiving for my mom for several years, and we enjoyed spending time together even if it was mostly in waiting rooms and my car. The fastest I ever ran a mile was eight minutes and six seconds. I drove the same car for 20 years and then replaced it with another one. I enjoy tipping, giving money to people on the street and Disneyland. I am a fan of baseball, Formula 1 racing and the Criterion Channel. I solve about 80% of New York Times crosswords. I take Prozac and Wellbutrin, and take Trazodone to sleep through the night. I wish I had a glassed in solarium so I could sleep in it on rainy nights. I would like to have a pet cat and a garage. I could happily live eating only cereal and fruit. I overshare on the internet and undershare elsewhere. āœŒļøšŸ’›
