my friend was visiting and asked me to help her with the merch booth she was working. and it brought me so much joy. in these current horrors, help your friends. you know what other things bring joy to my life? going grocery shopping with my friends. driving people to the airport. reading books beside each other in coffee shops. helping someone find an obscure pepper paste in town. selling shirts at a country show. trying to find an obscure theory book together for book club. sitting on someone's kitchen floor while they do dishes. you can't complain about the lack of community you experience without being apart of your immediate community, the small things happen to be the most fun and rewarding things to be a part of. support your loved ones.

Doesn’t really matter the reason. I’ve had people unexpectedly do this for me when I’ve gone through rough periods and I try to do the same now. like damn that lasagna or whatever meant so much. and when people are really down in the dumps it helps so much to be around people so take em out somewhere. Remind them what life/the world has to offer cause it’s easy to forget.

A therapist told me once that when I was despairing about the world (which is always) to do something small that can make a difference to someone else - she suggested buying a street newspaper, but I will also give money to someone who asks, tip my barista well, bring in my neighbor’s garbage cans, say thank you and mean it.

I have been calling in a lot of favors recently (mostly cat sitting as i’ve had a lot of travel necessities accumulate this month for some reason) and thankfully I have friends who are happy to do it for free, so I have been compensating them with tokens of gratitude. I got one friend who’s into sake a nice bottle from a place in town he hasn’t been to. for another friend I got them a big ol bag of their favorite sweet treats. Another friend of mine works on an IOU system so we have been exchanging favors (not in a quid pro quo way more of a serviceberry economy type beat). in these trying times we’re all feeling a little pinched, but a favor goes a long way in helping folks take care of what they have to do without putting them in more of a squeeze. Pay it forward and show a little personalized love and keep that IOU tally in your back pocket and build your own little economy of reciprocity
