Maybe some unorthodox choices but I’ve always been into non-narrative, experimental documentaries. Some of the best I know are “As I Was Moving Ahead, Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty”, “Koyaanisqatsi”, “Sans Soleil”. These were some of the purest, most powerful cinematic experiences I’ve had in my life, so I’d suggest you peep them. On a (slightly) more conventional note, literally any documentary made by Herzog

Hale County This Morning, This Evening — Definitely an acquired taste, but imo one of the best documentaries out there. Beautiful, slow, immersive. RaMell Ross took years worth of footage and curated a 76 minute work of art. Lots of discourse out there on it. HUGE rec.
Paris is Burning — basic rec but worth it if you’ve never seen. House/ballroom scene of the mid/late ‘80s NYC. I sob consistently every time.
Roger & Me — Love or hate Michael Moore, this doc is amazing. Covers US deindustrialization & the consequences for the midwest, specifically focusing on Flint, Michigan.
All That Breathes — Another breathtakingly beautiful doc. Follows two brothers in Delhi who run a bird hospital for injured black kites. Hindu nationalism, interspecies connection, ecological collapse. Nominated for an oscar. So good.

here are some favorites off the top of my head..
Zabardast: i'm partial to climbing/expedition docs, but this one is especially good. a travel diary of a group of voyagers exploring the remote lands of Pakistan to freeride ski down its mountains.
Night Fog: very heartbreaking look at WWII concentration camps
Dark Days: documents the lives of the homeless people living in the tunnels underneath New York City, without being intrusive or voyeuristic
Don't Look Back: self-explanatory (Minnesota's sweetheart)

I just watched Anselm (2023) by Wim Wenders; it made me think about how much room there is for documentary and art films to work with 3D in ways that blockbusters have not. Seeing a still shot of a forest at sunrise, or the pages of a book slowly being turned in 3D, was somewhat of a revelation for me.

I had been thinking about the fact that i’ve never been to the beach during wintertime and I’d very much love to, so I went on a day trip my dog. I had been feeling kinda blue for various reasons and instead of fuelling my melancholic state, walking on empty beaches with my headphones on and watching my dog run around was one of the biggest mood lifters as of late. I felt pacified in a way which my urban lifestyle would never allow me to. Just trust me and go to the largest body of water near you. It can be truly beautiful!!!

Hands down my favourite breakfast dish, and it’s not that complicated to do either. I mean, there’s creamy garlic yoghurt, there’s dill there’s runny egg yolk and sizzling chilli butter, do I need to say more??🧄🧈🥚 Here’s the recipe i use and a photo from the last time I made them
