I love when someone sings like they're about to cry, and Olivia Rodrigo has this down to a science. She starts most of her torch songs almost whimpering before they crescendo into the vocal equivalent of someone heaving and sighing.
This version is special. My body physically reacted when I first heard itâthe way the atmosphere echoes and amplifies each tearful run. The sadness doesnât just sit; it flickers, then soars and crashes like a swell. The song tumbles through this newly built ambience, breaking apart before pulling itself back together. Our Piscean vocalist is all waterârippling, drowning, caught in the undertow of her own tears.

Iâve only recently gotten into emo music, and this is a perfect depiction of the resigned frustration so many people suffering from depression have. Not to mention an amazing switch up towards the end. Watched it in concert in Berkeley and the crowd surfing was insane.

there is something so cool about this unspoken juxtaposition rule in the more psychologically volatile genres, where the lyrics are bleak and anxious, always tapping into darker territory, but the melody remains beautiful and oddly comforting. i have been re-looping lots of carissaâs wierd - songs about leaving lately, and now this thought refuses to leave me alone. idk!!!! itâs just such a common case where something viscerally crushing happens to produce the most tender and fragile sounds, and i know it is a bit of a cornplate-level observation, but i have been pondering a lot about this
