As a forager, I can really tell you that people are surprised and sometimes grossed out when I say I go and gather my food from the wild. We have normalised big supermarket chains as our only source of food, when in reality, if you learn the land you’re on, you’re surrounded by abundance that is free. It is an art that demands your time and attention, it demands you learn your land and how she changes through the seasons, and she allows you to learn what plants and mushrooms will give you sustenance in each season change. But she demands it in such a gentle, rewarding way, and to me—it’s enthralling. There are plants and mushrooms that share similarities to their edible counterpart, but are in fact extremely toxic. Being able to discern them is rewarding, and creating a delicious meal with them even more so. You know where you food has come from, and the journey it has taken to get to your plate. You know what plants have certain medicinal benefits and what season to look out for them in. You spend time in nature, you exercise while you gather. You have appreciation for each season and what yield it will bring you. It’s a very grounding act. Unfortunately, in some countries foraging is illegal due to reasons that are rooted in racism, which makes me a stronger believer that the law should be challenged. I believe some places in America it is illegal to forage, as well as some places in Australia. It’s a shame. tldr: fek big azz cooperate companies, get free food outside because the cost of living inflation SUCKS (and have fun while doing so)

how did you get into foraging? its definitely something i’m intrigued by, but i’m not sure how/where to start learning safe & sustainable practices. i also live in a city so it’s a little more difficult, but i’m still interested!

Honestly it started with my weird obsession with mushrooms, I wanted to learn as many as I could, and then I was fascinated with how some of them were edible but also had deadly lookalikes. It them spiralled into the same fascination but with plants. I recommend looking for books that are focused of your countries native plants. If you google “books for foraging in northern america” or wherever you’re from, a bunch of options should come up! Even youtube videos!

there used to be a mulberry tree on my walk to the grocery store and the homeowner's association had it torn down because it wasn't aesthetically pleasing enough. i'm doing research on why modernization is leading to a shift from a feeling of community and place and a big factor that keeps popping up is that people lose connection to the geography and land they live on and everyone's entire life is shifting from local to fully globalized and online. i think the loss of community foraging practices and community gardens is a big part of this. and then there's the fact that access to nature is becoming, especially in urban areas, a luxury for only the rich - which is a little terrifying. i miss the mulberry tree and its acid sweetness on sticky summer nights. they replaced it with a patch of invasive bamboo shoots and they've taken over the whole area

Yes, but as long as it’s done responsibly and sustainably - for instance some people just rip out mushrooms from the root so they can’t regrow for other people and animals living there who may need it for hibernation.

sniffle that’s a very important philosophy for me, for every one I take, I leave two/three behind. And if it’s a floret, I only take some leaves instead of the whole plant. One of my favourite mushroom spots got outed on a facebook page, and when I went there to forage again the area was barren and full of holes. It was actually really upsetting

sniffle not to be ”that person“ but as far as I know, picking mushrooms can actually HELP the mycelium by dispersing spores. i haven’t seen evidence that there has been issues with mushroom overharvesting / improper foraging. In the NE of the United States, ramps are a different story but I have yet to see real evidence that foraging is harmful

I love cooking and then running to the backyard for a lime from the tree or some rosemary it makes me feel like a homesteader. I want to hunt for some mushrooms but we’re not in the biome for it

I have a note in my phone to track fruit-bearing trees in my neighborhood. it’s the best when you find an apple tree on public land. I’d love if we had more fruit tree and edible plants in the city, perhaps i should do something about it

Going back to the hunter & gather mentality at this point. If you are my neighbour or you live in my neighbourhood and have a fruiting tree you ARE NOT SAFE 😝 Grocery prices in Melbourne rn are absolutely cooked thankfully it is citrus, blackberry and pomegranate season here 🙏😝 and i will be taking advantage of the five different houses in my area with fruiting trees. I also used to always get herbs and wild onion from the banks of the yarra. You can use them to make a bunch of easy vegetarian meals. Here is my favourite database for foraging in Victoria.
Get bang for your buck. Or atleast the best taste the produce has to offer. Also a great way to learn about the local economy, connect with producers etc etc.

We joined the Altadena Community Garden (after being on a waiting list for three years… so long I forgot we ever signed up when they called.) Since then, we ride our bikes down there every couple weeks or when we are back in town, and as I toil - for no other purpose than attempting to raise healthy vegetables and do something that doesn’t include a screen.   It’s the perfect tangible metaphor for living: We have to weed out the unwanted clutter and invasive influences so that we can grow the best, most nurturing edible plants into being - and then there is the harvest of food we have watered and grown! So thrilling! Meeting neighbors and swapping tips (usually it’s them guiding us:) is another highlight. So far we’ve grown collard greens, kale, tomatoes (through which we discovered stir fried green tomatoes yum), artichokes, squash (so much grew, we made them the centerpieces at our LA wedding and served an appetizer of squash, goat cheese and pomegranate), sorrel, basil, cilantro (hands down the most essential herb in my kitchen), eggplant, peppers, thyme and parsley (which led to the invention of our parsley pesto). As we become more and more plugged in and disconnected, the garden is a refuge and a physical reminder!  I highly recommend, fellow sapiens!
